Winchel leads Spartans to 4th place at Badger State

Dylan Winchel made his 2012-13 debut today and picked up where he left off last year.  The 2012 5th place medalist at 106 pounds in division two went 4-0 while pinning the 7th and 9th ranked wrestlers in division one in the semifinals and finals to lead the Spartans to a fourth place finish at the Badger State Invite.  Sycamore from Illinois won the team title followed by Merrill in second and Edgar in third.  Merrill is the second ranked team in division one while Edgar is second in division three.  The Spartans placed fourth despite wrestling without anybody at 138 and 285.Nobody else advanced to the championship match at their weight class, but five Spartans did finish third.  Michael Murnane, Greg Skon, Brock Polhamus, John Roddick and Kyle Burkhalter all finished 3-1 on the day.  Steven Kelly lost his second match of the tournament, but rebounded with three straight wins to finish 4-1 and in fifth place.106  -  Corey Zimmerman, Did Not Place, 0-2113  -  Dylan Winchel, 1st Place, 4-0 with three pins120  -  John Roddick, 3rd Place, 3-1 with a pin126  -  Steven Kelly, 5th Place, 4-1 with two pins132  -  Brock Polhamus, 3rd Place, 3-1 with a pin145  -  Michael Murnane, 3rd Place, 3-1 with a pin and major decision152  -  Dillon Erickson, Did Not Place, 1-2160  -  Walker Polhamus, Did Not Place, 0-2170  -  Greg Skon, 3rd Place, 3-1 with a major decision182  -  Kyle Burkhalter, 3rd Place, 3-1 with a pin195  -  Daniel Dawley, 7th Place, 3-2 with two pins220  -  Chase Bernett, 8th Place, 2-2 with two pinsThe Spartans are off until January 4th when they head to Kaukauna for the Cheesehead, which is probably the toughest tournament in Wisconsin and among the toughest tournaments anywhere.  A number of nationally ranked teams along with some very tough individual competition awaits the Spartans in a couple of weeks.  We'll have a complete and full preview of that tournament this coming week.  Congrats to the Spartans on another solid finish!
