Sparta wins Reedsburg Dual Invite, Middle School team stays hot

Sparta captured its first invitational title of the year this afternoon winning five duals to capture the 2009 Reedsburg Dual Invitational.  Sparta defeated the likes of Monroe, Westby, Racine Horlick, Oregon and Reedsburg to bring home the championship.  And on the middle school side, the Spartans had an impressive showing in Tomah despite missing a big portion of their team.  Check the middle school page for details and results from today's tournament in Tomah. The Spartans won in decisive fashion in all five of their dual meets with the closest margin being 18 points.  Sparta defeated both Westby (44-26) and Reedsburg (45-27) by 18 points.  At the same time, Sparta used a full roster to its advantage picking up six points on forfeits 17 times during the day.  However, even when the Spartans weren't winning by forfeits, they were cleaning up on the mat.A number of Spartans had solid days.  Bryce Nowaczyk, Adam Weidl and Matt Tourdot all came back with 5-0 records while Nick Winchel, Toby Mosley, Logan Denasha, Tom Tourdot and Jordan Stanek all came back with 4-1 records.  The 4-1 day for Winchel was even sweeter after he suffered a season-ending injury last year at this event.Senior Brandon Brueggen had probably the toughest bracket of the day.  He lost to Shane Rockweiler, a two-time state qualifier from Reedsburg, 3-2.  In the Monroe match, Brueggen faced Dillon Weckerly, a Bi-State medalist from a year ago.  The rest of the wrestlers in his bracket have either won more than 20 matches in a season in the past or have won various tournaments at one point or another in their high school careers.  In other words, there were no breaks on the day in this weight class. For a quick summary check out the results below, but if you want to see how each Spartan did in every match, click here to get those details...103  --  Bryce Nowaczyk, 5-0 with four pins112  --  Adam Wiedl, 5-0 with two pins119  --  Jacob Denton, 2-3125  --  Nick Winchel, 4-1 with two major decisions and a pin130  --  Toby Mosley, 4-1 with a pin135  --  Derek VonRuden, 3-2 with two major decisions140  --  Logan Denasha, 4-1 with a tech fall and a pin145  --  Nick Anderson, 2-3152  --  Morgan Leis, 3-2 with a major decision160  --  Tom Tourdot, 4-1 with a major decision and a pin171  --  Brandon Brueggen, 2-3 with a pin189  --  Jordan Stanek, 4-1 with three pins215  --  Matt Tourdot, 5-0 with two pins285  --  Steven Stevenson, 2-1 with two pins285  --  Isaac Borrenson, 0-2Next up, the Spartans kick off the MVC season with a dual at Holmen on Thursday.  JV action starts at 615pm while the varsity will hit the mat around 730pm.  Keep checking Spartanwrestling.com for updates and a preview for Thursday's match.
