Sparta takes 2nd to Oregon at Reedsburg Invite, Lax Central JV Invite Results posted

UPDATED:  I've updated the records below from the Reedsburg Invite to reflect forfeit victories.  I was unsure if they counted or not, but after a comment from Rick Brohmer and some additional verification, I found out they do indeed count.  Thanks Rick!

Sparta lost a heartbreaker to Oregon Saturday afternoon en route to a second place finish at the 8-team dual invite. 

Inthe first dual, Sparta defeated Lancaster 38-28.  Next up was MadisonWest, which the Spartans dismantled 64-3.  Next came the dual withOregon.  The score was 34-31 in favor of the Spartans heading into theheavyweight match before Oregon's Paul Hockett pinned Aaron Freeman in1:15 to give the Panthers the 37-34 victory.  Pins were key for Oregonas five of their seven victories came by that route.

Next up wasReedsburg, which the Spartans defeated 36-30.  Finally, Sparta avengeda loss last season to Westby by rolling over the Norseman 43-31.  Thefour dual victories Saturday pushed Sparta's dual record for the yearto 5-1. 

On the day, Matt Tourdot was the only Spartan to wrestle and winall five of his matches and he did so in dominating fashion takeingthree by pin and the other two by major decision and technical fall. Derek McDonald and Jordan Stanek were both 5-0 on the day, but each got one victory via the forfeit route.

Nextup for the Spartans is a trip to La Crosse Central on Thursday to kickoff MVC action.  The Varsity will take the mat at 7:30pm while the JVkicks off at 6:15.  This should be a good dual.  Central gave Sparta arun for its money last year.

Now onto the JV. The Spartan JV squad travelled to La Crosse Central over the weekendfor a JV Tournament of their own.  With Wisconsin Rapids in thetournament, the competition was sure to be higher than some typical JVtournaments.  I remember wrestling a kid when I wrestled thistournmanet that went on to become a state qualifier.  That's how deepthat team is.  Anyway, onto the results for Sparta.
