Hutson dominates, McDonald falls...

Sparta's Derek McDonald fell behind early and lost to River Falls' Logan Cudd 12-9.  McDonald had Cudd on his back as the match ended.  Now, McDonald needs Cudd to win his next match in order to earn a second match.  Cudd will wrestle Carl DeLuca of Wisconsin Rapids later this evening so McDonald's fate will be known by the end of the night.

215-pounder Trevor Hutson won his opening round match in dominating fashion by beating up on Slinger's Joel Yogerst 8-1.  Hutson now advances to wrestle Wisconsin Rapids' Vance Grube (40-4) in the state quarterfinal match later this evening.  If Hutson wins, he won't wrestle again until tomorrow night's semifinals, which start at 7pm.  Should he fall, Hutson would wrestle tomorrow in the consolation bracket starting at 10am.  Either way, Hutson's first round victory guarantees him two more matches.

Check back here tonight for full updates.

Today's the day for Hutson & McDonald

It's state tournament time in Wisconsin and Sparta will see two of its wrestlers take the mat at the Kohl Center today.  Derek McDonald (112) and Trevor Hutson (215) will make their state tournament debuts today.

Derek McDonald (36-10) would really like to get to 40 victories on the year.  Four more victories either means a state championship or a medal.  However, before he can worry about that he has to worry about River Falls' Logan Cudd.  Name sound familiar?  That's because it's just the latest installment in a long line of great wrestlers with the last name of Cudd to come out of River Falls.  A number of Logan's brothers wrestled for UW.

If McDonald should defeat the freshman Cudd, he would likely have Carl DeLuca of Wisconsin Rapids who comes in sporting a 40-2 record.

Then there is Trevor Hutson.  Hutson takes a 24-2 record against Slinger's Joel Yogerst (25-1) who lost his only match of the year in the sectional final against Kaukauna's Matt Wallace (35-9).  So the 25-1 record might be deceiving.

If Hutson should get by Yogerst, he'll have a tough match.  He'll face either Wisconsin Rapids' Vance Grube (38-4) or Kenosha Tremper's Joe Epping (40-3).

Both wrestlers will be taking the mat early this afternoon.  Check back here later today for updates, possibly some video and more information on the state tournament.  As always, if you need up to date results, be sure to check out Trackwrestling

Hutson, McDonald heading to State

The season just got a little longer for Trevor Hutson and Derek McDonald after both of them won their sectional brackets and each earned their first trip to the Kohl Center.

McDonald rolled through his first two matches beating Mike McDaniel of DeForest by pin in 1:21. McDaniel defeated Zurik Adler of Tomah earlier in the week 10-0. Adler defeated McDonald earlier this season, but McDonald held the season edge. In the finals, McDonald took down Baraboo's Matt Kowalke by pin in 5:55 to earn his first trip to state.

At 215, Sparta's Trevor Hutson rebounded nicely from an early season injury that kept him off the mat for almost a month. Hutson defeated Madison West's Anthony Esealuka 7-1 in his first match of the day then took down Reedsburg's Seth Brandt 6-2 in the semifinals. In the finals, Hutson earned his first trip to state by tripping up DeForest's Drew Barman 6-4 in overtime.

With the exception of Matt Tourdot, Mike Jacobsen and Kevin Schmitz, every other Spartan lost their first match. Losing your first match eliminates you from the bracket.

The three who did win their first match each lost matches in the semifinals and each wrestled back to 3rd place overall. Tourdot was 3-1 on the day, but lost to Sauk Prairie's Austin McGuine 10-5.

Jacobson lost a heartbreaker to Sauk Prairie's James Wixom by a score of 9-8. And Kevin Schmitz was taken down by DeForest's Richard Skaife by a score of 10-5.

Each of the guys that Tourdot, Jacobsen and Schmitz lost too ended up winning their brackets. Congrats to all Spartan sectional qualifiers and extra congrats go out to Hutson and McDonald.

Check back here in a day or two for information on opening round matchups at state for Hutson and McDonald.

Video from Tomah-DeForest Dual

Below you will find some clips from two matches of the Tomah-DeForest team sectional final dual.  The clips come from the 135 and 145 pound matches.  Don't be surprised seeing Tomah's guys up a weight.  They moved up for better matchups against DeForest.

Tomah will wrestle Arrowhead in the first round of the team state tournament.  Arrowhead is currently ranked 5th in the state while Tomah is an honorable mention.  The winner of this dual then has to wrestle the winner of the Kaukauna-Milton dual.  All bets should be on 3rd ranked Kaukauna in this match as they go up against unranked Milton.  Anyway, here are some clips from Tuesday's dual...

====================

Below:  Tomah's Zach Taylor wrestles DeForest's Tyler Rauls at 135 pounds.  Rauls defeated Taylor 10-4.

Below:  Tomah's Jacob McGinnis wrestles DeForest's Anthony Dunahee at 145 pounds.  McGinnis pinned Dunahee in 2:23.

Tomah downs DeForest

Tomah found itself back in the State Team Tournament Tuesday night after defeating DeForest 38-23.  The Timberwolves won 8 of 14 matches including two by two points or less.  The match of the night may have been the first match of the night.  Starting off at 285, Tomah's John Van Gundy (36-7) took down DeForest's Richard Skaife (35-10) in a 7-6 double overtime victory.  While it was the closest match, it also might been the slowest match of the night.  Both wrestlers were one call away from being disqualified for stalling and each received four stalling points from their opponent.  Each earned an escape during the match leading to a 5-5 tie heading into overtime.

The winner of the Tomah-DeForest sectional final will wrestle the winner of the Arrowhead-Brookfield East sectional dual.  Tomah and DeForest got lucky with their draw of being on the top half of the state team bracket.  Both teams will avoid Wausau West or Wisconsin Rapids before the finals.  However, perrenial powerhouses Milton, Kaukauna and Stoughton do stand in their way.  Of course, none of this matters for either team if they don't win tomorrow night.

Check back here tomorrow night for full results and some video clips from Tomah's dual with DeForest.  For up to the minute results, be sure to check Trackwrestling.com.

Videos, videos, videos galore

As promised, here are some wrestling clips from Saturday's regional action in Reedsburg.   A big thanks to Mike Montgomery for supplying the videos.

Below:  Sparta's Michael Jacobsen takes on La Crosse Central's Theo Jensen-Innis in the championship match at 160 pounds.  Jensen-Innis pinned Jacobsen in 4:38

Below:  Reedsburg's Mike Huber defeats Tomah's Dustin Christner in the championship match at 171 pounds by a score of 11-4.

Sparta 3rd at Regionals, Hutson wins at 215

Sparta tallied 166 points to finish 3rd at Saturday's regional in Reedsburg.  Tomah will wrestle the winner of the Waunakee regional Tuesday at Sparta.  I suppose you could go there and cheer them on, after all they are Tomah, but then again it makes our area look better if teams from the MVC continually advance to team state.  So, in the end, I would suggest you go and cheer Tomah on Tuesday night in Sparta.

Back to the important matters...  Sparta advanced 12 out of a possible 14 wrestlers to next weekend's Sectionals in Waunakee.  Trevor Hutson won the regional at 215 while Derek McDonald, Matt Tourdot, Kevin Schmitz and Michael Jacobsen all placed second.  Tourdot lost his second match of the day and wrestled back to second in impressive fashion.

For full team results, check out the stats below......

Sparta 3rd at MVC/Coulee, Hutson wins at 215

Sparta scored 232.5 points to nab third at Saturday's MVC/Coulee Tournament in Arcadia.  Tomah won the tournament with 343.5 points while Viroqua came in second with 256 points.  Sparta edged out Westby by a single point to stay in the top three.

This year's tournament had a screwy seeding method.  All MVC wrestlers were placed on one side of the bracket and all Coulee wrestlers on the other side.  Because the MVC had more teams, many of the Coulee wrestlers got first round byes into the quarterfinals.  That was a lot of free points for teams like Viroqua and Westby.  Many of the matches that should have been finals ended up being semifinal matches--the Hutson/Viner semifinal match is an example of that.  So while Viroqua beat out Sparta and Westby was knocking on the Spartans' door, remember that those two teams got a lot of free points and had fresher wrestlers later in the day.

On the day, Sparta was second in the tournament in number of pins grabbing 16 in all.  To see who got those pins, check out the individual results below...

====================

103  --  Tom Tourdot, 7th Place, 2-2 with a major decision
112  --  Derek McDonald, 3rd Place, 4-2 with two pins and a major decision
119  --  Nick Winchel, 7th Place, 3-2 with two pins and a major decision
125  --  Derick Johnson, 2nd Place, 3-1
130  --  Cody Olson, 7th Place, 3-1 with two pins
135  --  Morgan Leis, 5th Place, 3-2 with a major decision
140  --  Matt Tourdot, 3rd Place, 4-1 with a pin and two major decisions
145  --  Jordan Stanek, 6th Place, 2-3 with a pin
152  --  Nick Anderson, Did Not Place, 0-2
160  --  Mike Jacobsen, 3rd Place, 4-1 with two pins
171  --  Seth Harelson, 7th Place, 2-2 with two pins
189  --  Brandon Amundson, 7th Place, 3-2 with a pin
215  --  Trevor Hutson, 1st Place, 4-0 with a pin and major decision
285  --  Kevin Schmitz, 4th Place, 3-2 with two pins and a tech fall

====================

Sparta's Trevor Hutson sneaked by Logan's Josh Viner for a 2-1 victory at the 215 weight class.  As you can see, this was probably the real final in the weight class as Hutson went on to record a 10-0 major decision victory over Kyle Vesbach of Viroqua in the finals.  This was a prime example of how this seeding mechanism kept the best wrestlers from facing off in the finals for a number of weight classes.

It's officially the tournament season.  Regionals kick off Saturday.  I don't have the current location for them but I'll update it here when I find that out.  However, I do know that team sectional dual will be at Sparta.  The team champion of the upcoming regional will wrestle the team champion of the regional surrounding the Madison area and north.  Winner of the team sectional dual will qualify for a spot in the state team tournament.  It would be nice to have a home dual with that on the line.

Check back here later this week for more news and stats concerning the season and the upcoming regional.
