Below is a segment of a highlight tape that covered the 1996 state wrestling championships. The video features an interview with Spartan cheerleaders before Troy Lietzau stepped onto the mat to defend his 152 pound state championship in that year’s finals. The video was produced at the time by Shockley Communications, which was later bought by Quincy Newspapers, Inc. A big thanks to them for allowing us to use and post the video here.
This is the type of hard-to-find video that I’m looking to bring to Spartanwrestling.com so alumni of all ages can enjoy the content we post here. If anyone has any video from the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s or 2000s that they’d like posted here, shoot me an email and we can talk about getting that up here. The more the merrier is what I say.

Some of you may have already seen this video as it was played at the banquet following the 2009-10 season. It consists mainly of pictures I took throughout the year. It’s a little over six minutes long and features some of my favorite images from Sparta’s 17-1 MVC championship season. The video is best watched in 720P or 1080P HD. Here’s a blast from the past that includes music from Tina Turner, the BoDeans and Bruce Springsteen. Featured in the video are Spartan seniors Jason Semann, Craig Erickson, Jeremy Rickert, Ryan Gann, Matt Henthorne, Beau Leis, Andy Tatzel and Brad Stafford. Everything from bowl cuts and buzz cuts to takedowns and tech falls are in this highlight reel from Sparta’s 1997-98 MVC championship season. State qualifiers that year were seniors Jason Semann, Andy Tatzel and Ryan Gann.
With Sparta’s 41-20 victory over Tomah on Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010, the Spartans ended Tomah’s 35-match MVC winning streak and earned their first conference title since the 2003-04 season. With the win, the Spartans also pushed their regular season dual record to 17-0, which remains the best start in program history.

Below is one of the more dramatic duals in recent memory for the Spartans. Up 30-29 heading into the final dual of the night, Sparta’s Tristan Zurfluh edged out Weston/Ithaca’s Nick Bennett 2-1 to give the Spartans a 33-29 victory. For some reason, there wasn’t film of Xavier Lopez’ and Bryce Nowaczyk’s matches or Dylan Winchel’s forfeit victory. However, we have video below of the 11 other matches.
