Matt Tourdot had an impressive day wrestling unattached for Old Dominion yesterday at the 30th annual Pembroke Classic at the University of North Carolina Pembroke.  Wrestling heavyweight for the Monarchs, Tourdot won seven of his eight matches en route to a third place finish.  Wrestling unattached means that Old Dominion may plan on red-shirting Tourdot, which will allow him to wrestle while not using up a year of eligibility.  He will be able to wrestle in open tournaments such as this one, but won’t be able to wrestle at regionals, nationals or any conference dual meet unless they want to sacrifice the red-shirt.

Tourdot lost his second match of the tournament 8-6 to Matt Wade of  Newberry.  After that, though, Tourdot rattled off seven straight victories including a 4-0 victory against Wade in the match to wrestle for third place.  Tourdot won a combination of dominating and close matches on his way to going 7-1 on the day.  Match-by-match results are below…

Match 1  -  Tourdot defeats Marquis McKinnery (Dartmouth) by tech fall 18-1 in 4:30
Match 2  -  Matt Wade (Newberry) defeats Tourdot 8-6
Match 3  -  Tourdot defeats Matt Colter (Newberry) by pin in 0:35
Match 4  -  Tourdot defeats Karim Mansour (Md.-Baltimore County) 9-0
Match 5  -  Tourdot wins by forfeit over Khiry Reid (Campbell)
Match 6  -  Tourdot defeats Chris Giddens (UNC-Pembroke) 2-0
Match 7  -  Tourdot defeats Matt Wade (Newberry) 4-0
Match 8  -  Tourdot defeats Corey Anderson (Newberry) 9-7

We will be updating Tourdot’s progress throughout the year here on Spartanwrestling.com.

Sparta will be sending four wrestlers to the state tournament in Madison next week.  Adam Wiedl, Brandon Rickert and Jordan Stanek all placed second while Matt Tourdot took home the individual title.  Brandon Brueggen and Tom Tourdot were one match away from qualifying for the state tournament, but lost their third place matches.

It will be the first trip to the Kohl Center for Wiedl, Rickert and Stanek.  Tourdot will be looking to improve upon his third place finish in division one last year at 189 pounds.  He will enter the tournament with a 47-0 record and can improve to 50-0 should he win out.

Wiedl will enter the state tournament with a 39-12 record, Rickert a 27-6 record and Stanek with a 44-5 record.  State brackets should be up later tonight and when they are, we’ll update here with matchups.

In what might have been the match of the day, Sparta’s Matt Tourdot met Lodi’s Cody Endres in a semifinal match at 215 pounds pitting the top ranked wrestler in division two in Tourdot against the third-ranked wrestler in Endres.  At the start of the year, Endres was ranked No. 1 and Tourdot was ranked second.  Adding to the drama was the fact that Tourdot and Endres split matches over the summer.  It looked to be an epic battle–especially for a sectional.  Well it turned out to be anything but.  Tourdot largely controlled Endres in the opening frame and then only 30 seconds into the second period ended the match with a pin in 2:30.  Endres went onto take third while Tourdot major decisioned his opponent in the finals.

It’s going to be a fun state tournament and we will have a scouting report up here for Sparta’s opponents at the state tournament when all the information is compiled and put online.

UPDATED 8:31am —  On the topic of rankings, Crossface just came out with their rankings for wrestlers in all divisions.  Instead of ranking the top 1o or 15 wrestlers at each weight class in each division, they took the simple approach of making one list at each weight class of the top wrestlers from all three divisions.  For example, at 215 pounds, the rankings include wrestlers from divisions one, two and three.

And that is where Tourdot comes in.  He’s ranked fourth behind Alex Polizzi of Beloit Memorial (D1), Chad Johnson of DeSoto (D3) and Cody Endres of Lodi (D2).  I think a lot of these rankings have to do with the fact that these guys placed higher than Tourdot at the state tournament last year.  Johnson was a Division Three state champion, Polizzi was a state runner-up losing 9-8 to Vance Grube of Wisconsin Rapids who was a defending state champion and Endres lost in overtime in the state finals last year.

Polizzi is ranked higher on a national level than Tourdot so no surprise there, but most of the time these rankings are based on past performances and in reality, Tourdot has had two great years and one exceptional year last year.  He’s come on stronger in the past year and that is why his name recognition might be lagging to those outside the Coulee Region and Southern Wisconsin.  Additionally, many of the guys ahead of Tourdot have finished in the top three at state their first three years in high school.

After appearing as an honorable mention in both the Crossface and Wisconsin Wrestling Online Division Two team rankings for the past two months, Sparta is now ranked 11th in Division Two according to Wisconsin Wrestling Online.  The Spartans remain an honorable mention in Crossface.  I still think the Spartans’ ranking is a tad low considering how they manhandled a number of other teams garnering votes in the rankings.  Those teams include Chippewa Falls (25-point victory) and Westby (18-point victory).

At 215 pounds, Matt Tourdot was stuck behind Lodi’s Cody Endres for the top ranking at that weight class in Division Two.  However, an injury and a loss by Endres coupled with Tourdot’s impressive wrestling this season has moved Tourdot into the top ranking.  This might be the first time Sparta’s had a wrestler ranked No. 1 since the 1995-96 season when Troy Lietzau was wrestling en route to his second consecutive state championship at 152 pounds.  Also entering the rankings this week are Jordan Stanek (8th) at 189 pounds and Toby Mosley (honorable mention) at 130 pounds.

In other news, the next meeting of the Sparta Wrestling Club will be on Monday, January 11th at 7pm in the high school cafeteria.

The new alumni section with an article by Joel Dutton is set to open in a few days.  It will essentially be another blog that will be opened up to alumni so that they can share their wisdom about wrestling, training and more along with providing avenues to connect with former teammates, coaches and fans.  Check back here on Spartanwrestling.com in the next couple days for an update on that.  And finally, I’m still working on the JV wrestling photos from the Spartan JV Invite and will post these here as soon as they are done.
