State Tournament Updates

by Derek on February 24, 2011

9:22 pm —  Nekoosa/Port Edward’s Gage Ferkey pinned Sparta’s Kyle Burkhalter in 5:20 to bring Sparta’s 2010-11 season to a close.  It was 2-0 at the end of the first, but a takedown followed by a quick two-point nearfall quickly put Burkhalter behind 6-0.  Burkhalter was able to get in on Ferkey’s legs, but had trouble finishing his moves.

While I know this was not the outcome Derek and Kyle had hoped for, a big congrats goes out to these two individuals for qualifying for their first ever state tournaments.  Derek will try to qualify for his second state tournament next year as a senior while Burkhalter will come back as a junior and try to do the same.

Photos of tonight’s action will be posted to Spartanwrestling.com later tonight…

9:08 pm —  Kyle Burkhalter’s match is underway…

9:00 pm —  Kyle Burkhalter is on deck on mat 3 at the Kohl Center.  You can watch Burkhalter thanks to Fox Sports North by clicking on the following link and then clicking Mat 3.  It’s a black mat.  Here’s the link…

8:06 pm —  Derek VonRuden’s season came to an end tonight with a first-round loss against Amery’s Kyle Larson (36-9).  VonRuden finishes the year with a record of 38-12.  Down 4-3 with 15 seconds left, Larson snapped VonRuden down and spun around to secure the deciding takedown and win.  A first-round loss in the division two state tournament bracket does not provide any chance for a wrestleback.  Next up for Sparta is Kyle Burkhalter at 171 pounds.

7:53 pm —  Derek VonRuden’s match is underway…

6:23 pm —  We will have updates from Derek VonRuden’s and Kyle Burkhalter’s first round matches tonight as soon as each of them are completed.  We’ll also have photos of the guys in action coming later tonight or early tomorrow.  Go Spartans!!!

The first installment of this year’s Coulee Region Power Rankings is now up.  Sparta retains the top spot in the area with Holmen and New Lisbon hot on the Spartans’ heels.  Tomah debuts at fourth while Viroqua, Central, Aquinas and Arcadia round out the top eight.  The top spot in the rankings will be up for grabs Thursday, Dec. 9th when Holmen visits Sparta in a key early-season MVC showdown.

Head coach Jake Larsen wants anyone interested in ordering tickets for the upcoming state tournament to contact him by Saturday, December 4th.  This year’s tournament will be Thursday, February 24th through Saturday, February 26th at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin.  You can contact Larsen at his email address here.

Eight Spartan kids qualified for the WWF Kids Folkstyle State Tournament back in March.  Yes, I know, this is coming terribly late.  The Spartan kids wrestled for two teams with five representing Sparta and three representing La Crosse Area Wrestling or LAW.  The five from Sparta were Blake Brooks, David Hayes, Brett Von Ruden, Justin Marx and Nickolas Church.  The free wrestling for LAW were John Roddick, Alice Todryk and Brock Polhamus.

Three Spartans medaled with Alice Todryk leading the way and bringing home a state championship.  Todryk won the three matches including a 52 second pin in the finals over Ithaca’s Morgan Wiedenfeld.  The way they do brackets at youth tournament is by age and weight.  Todryk won the Girls division with birthdates between 1998 and 2000.

Bringing home silver for Sparta was Brett Von Ruden in the 84-pound 1999-2000 division.  Von Ruden went 3-1 on the day before falling to Hortonville’s Elliot Luker 6-1 in the finals.  Sparta’s only other medalist was Brock Polhamus in the 100-pound 1997-98 division.  Polhamus went 4-2 on the day while losing to Mason Stokke of Menomonie twice.

Here is how the rest of the Spartans did in terms of their records on the day:  Blake Brooks (0-2), David Hayes (2-2), Justin Marx (1-2), Nickolas Church (1-2) and John Roddick (2-2).  Full results are after the pictures below.  Click on the pictures to see a larger version of each.  Thanks to Mike Roddick and the Bailey family for providing these images!!

NOTE:  Only the first five are from the state tournament while the rest are some pictures of the youth wrestlers in action throughout the year.  The team picture with only four coaches is the Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd grade group while the team picture with five coaches is the 3rd-8th grade group.

A season for the record books, Tourdot finals photo gallery

This was a season to remember for Sparta and for Matt Tourdot.  On a team and individual level, it was one of the best Spartan teams to ever step onto the mat.  Eight Spartans finished with more than 30 wins while Bryce Nowaczyk finished with 29 and Brandon Rickert (27) and Toby Mosley (24) would [...]
