State Scouting Report

by Derek on February 24, 2010

Over the past couple days, my dad and I have looked over some data about Sparta’s first round opponents at the state tournament and compiled that information below.  Not much can be said beyond the first and second matches for these guys, but what we can say with certainty is below.  Here goes…

==========

112  –  Adam Wiedl

  • First round opponent is sophomore Joe Selsing (36-3) of Berlin.  Selsing won his regional while placing 3rd at sectionals winning 5-1 in the 3rd place match.  During the year, he also won the Eastern Valley Conference Tournament as well as the Watertown Holiday Mini-scramble.
  • If Wiedl wins his match against Selsing, he will face Jack sophomore Jack Pearce (38-1) of Ashland.  Pearce is currently ranked 5th in D2 according to Wisconsin Wrestling Online.  Pearce was a state qualifier a year ago at 103 pounds going 1-2 at the tournament.  He finished his freshman campaign with a 26-10 record.

119  –  Brandon Rickert

  • First round opponent is senior Austin Eskola (36-10) of Luck/Frederic/Grant.  Eskola finished his junior campaign with a 25-16 record and fourth place finish at sectionals.  He is currently ranked 11th in D2 according to Wisconsin Wrestling Online and lost to 4th ranked Sam Huppert of Ellsworth in the sectional tournament.
  • If Rickert wins his match against Eskola, he will face junior Joseph Her (35-5) of Two Rivers.  Her is currently ranked 2nd in D2 behind Cuba City/Southwestern’s Bob Donar who Rickert lost to at the sectional tournament 4-3.  Her won his sectional competition

189  –  Jordan Stanek (44-5)

  • First round opponent is junior Shaun Robotka (35-9) of Chetek/Prairie Farm.  Robotka was 3rd at his sectional and 2nd at regionals.  He was pinned in 2:19 by Dan Schoen who is the top ranked guy in D2 according to Wisconsin Wrestling Online.  Robotka is currently ranked 12th in D2 according to Wisconsin Wrestling Online.
  • If Stanek wins his first round match, he will wrestle senior Dylan Iczkowski (40-1) of Mosinee.  Iczkowski placed 2nd last year at the state tournament at 189 pounds losing 2-1 in the finals.  His only loss of the year was to Davion Willis of Milwaukee Custer.  Willis is ranked 4th in D1 at 171 pounds.  He pinned Tomah’s Josh Von Haden in 3:25 at the Nekoosa Invite.  You can watch a video of Iczkowski below…

215  –  Matt Tourdot (47-0)

  • Tourdot is the top-ranked wrestler in D2 at 215 pounds and the favorite to win the state title.  Being the top-ranked wrestler for most of the year, Tourdot has wrestled with a target on his back and performed well.  In his biggest test of the year, the sectional semifinals, Tourdot dismantled Lodi’s Cody Endres in a matchup of the top-ranked (Tourdot) and 3rd-ranked wrestlers in D2 at 215 pounds.  In the process, Tourdot also avenged a loss over the summer to Endres.  After finishing 3rd at 189 pounds in D1 last year, Tourdot will be looking to add a state title to his list of accomplishments.
  • First round opponent is … a bye.  As a sectional champion in divisions two and three, you get a bye the first round of the state tournament.  You don’t wrestle Thursday night, but you still need to make weight.  Tourdot will wrestle the winner of the Kent Girmscheid-Steve Chojnacki match.
  • Kent Girmscheid (43-8) is a senior out of Pewaukee.  He was a state qualifier in 2009 at 215, but did not place and finished the year with a 41-10 record.  At the Cheesehead in Kaukauna, he placed 7th.  He was pinned in the sectional final by Cody Seibel (30-1) of Kewaskum.  He enters the state tournament ranked 6th in D2 according to Wisconsin Wrestling Online.  You can find a video of Girmscheid after the scouting report on Steve Chojnacki.
  • Steve Chojnacki (32-8) is a senior out of Stanley-Boyd/Thorp.  He is currently ranked 12th in D2 according to Wisconsin Wrestling Online.  Chojnacki lost in overtime in sectionals 4-2 to Frank Dobbs of G.E.T.  Was a regional champion this year after placing 3rd the previous year and finishing with a 18-15 record.

After what’s listed above, the possibilities become too much to review here.  You can follow the action on Trackwrestling.com as well as here for updates on how the action is going.  You’ll probably get quicker updates on Trackwrestling.com, but we will be updating this page with results throughout the tournament as well as photos and any video we might acquire of the matches.  Good luck to Sparta!

The lowdown on Lodi

by Derek on February 15, 2010

This morning I looked over Trackwrestling at the team Lodi put on the mat at this past weekend’s regional in Jefferson then went back through the year and recorded some results and made notes of any matches where Lodi wrestlers had wrestled the same guys as Sparta at some point throughout the year.  There are some interesting tidbits.  Check ‘em out below…

103  –  John Joutras (26-14), Placed 2nd at Regionals, 2nd in the Capitol Conference tournament, 5th at the Tomah Scramble.  Both Joutras and Bryce Nowaczyk wrestled Tomah’s Twanner Dworak this year.  Dworak pinned Joutras in 1:41 while Nowaczyk fell 8-6 to Dworak.

112  –  Michael Clapper (21-16), Placed 3rd at Regionals, 2nd at Capitol Conference and 6th at the Tomah Scramble, Pinned Tomah’s Skyler McCarthy in 34 seconds.  McCarthy was tech falled by Brandon Rickert 19-1.  Clapper also lost to Erk Vesbach of Viroqua 6-5 whereas Adam Wiedl pinned Vesbach in 3:19 at the Lancaster Tournament.

119  –  Alex Ibinger (21-16), Placed 2nd at Regionals, 3rd at the Capitol Conference and 9th at the Tomah Scramble

125  –  Getasew Shimshak (34-6), Currently ranked 6th at 125 pounds in division two according to Wisconsin Wrestling Online, He was a 2009 state qualifier at 130 pounds, but did not place.  He placed 1st at Regionals, 1st at Capitol Conference, 2nd at the Marty Loy Classic and 1st at the Tomah Scramble.  He pinned Tomah’s Mike Linehan in 57 seconds at the Tomah Scramble.

130  –  Ryan Lehr (29-12), Lehr was a state qualifier at 119 pounds last year, but did not place.  He placed 2nd at Regionals, 3rd at the Capitol Conference and 4th at the Tomah Scramble.  Tony Koch (Reedsburg) beat Lehr 6-5 and Koch pinned Derek VonRuden at the Reedsburg Dual Tournament in 1:05.

135  –  Clint Heimbecker (29-12), Placed 1st at Regionals, 1st at Capitol Conference, 6th at the Tomah Scramble and 7th at the Marty Loy Classic.  Heimbecker beat Trae Mazera (Lancaster) 7-4.  Mazera major decisioned Logan Denasha at the Reedsburg Dual Tournament by a score of 15-2.

140  –  Justin Miller (31-9), Placed 1st at Regionals, 1st at Capitol Conference and 4th at the Tomah Scramble.  Miller pinned Tomah’s Jacob Dubord in 5:02.  Dubord majored Nick Anderson 11-3 during this year’s Sparta-Tomah dual.

145  –  Jesse Ziegler (17-7), Placed 2nd at Regionals, 2nd at Capitol Conference and 6th at the Tomah Scramble.  Ziegler majored Ryan Kohler of Reedsburg 11-3.  Morgan Leis also majored Kohler by a score of 10-1.

152  –  Tony Zeman (39-1), Currently ranked 1st at 152 pounds in division two according to Wisconsin Wrestling Online.  Placed 1st at Regionals, 1st at Capitol Conference, 3rd at the Marty Loy Classic and 1st at the Tomah Scramble.  Pinned Tomah’s Travis Kirchner in 53 seconds at the Tomah Scramble.

160  –  Michael Watters (6-3), Placed 3rd at Regionals and 3rd at Capitol Conference.  Watters appears to be a new arrival on varsity as most of his matches from the first three months of the year were on junior varsity.

171  –  Dakota Cable (42-3), Placed 1st at Regionals, 1st at Capitol Conference, 1st at the Marty Loy Classic and 2nd at the Tomah Scramble.  Currently ranked 2nd at 171 pounds in division two according to Wisconsin Wrestling Online.  One of Cable’s three defeats this year was to Reedsburg’s Shane Rockweiler by a score of 6-4.  Brueggen has lost two very close matches to Rockweiler this year.  Cable and Brueggen also share the honor of defeating Viroqua’s Jack Cocchiola.  Brueggen has done so twice while Cable pinned Cocchiola in 5:50 earlier this year.

189  –  Jamison Adler (28-11), Placed 1st at Regionals, 2nd at Capitol Conference and 2nd at the Tomah Scramble.  Adler defeated Mike Von Haden 10-6.  Matt Tourdot pinned Mike Von Haden in 1:40 at the Sparta-Tomah dual.

215  –  Cody Endres (13-1), Currently ranked third this year in division two at 215 pounds according to Wisconsin Wrestling Online.  Started off the year ranked 1st, but fell to Anthony Edgren of New Lisbon at the Tomah Scramble in double overtime.  Lost a lot of wrestling time in the middle of the year due to injury, but is now back.  He was a 2009 state runner-up at 215 pounds losing in overtime in the finals.  He would be considered one of the top competition of Matt Tourdot (43-0) going into the state tournament.  Tourdot and Endres are on the same side of the sectional bracket so it’s likely they will meet in the semifinals there if they don’t meet Tuesday evening.

285  –  Ryan Quick (29-13), Placed 2nd at Regionals, 1st at Capitol Conference, 6th at the Tomah Scramble and 6th at the Marty Loy Classic.  Currently an honorable mention in division two according to Wisconsin Wrestling Online.  Wrestled Viroqua’s Taylor Henry and lost 3-2.  Sparta’s Steve Stevenson has wrestled Henry twice this year falling both times by pin in under one minute.

==========

I compiled a mock roster of the two teams and did a couple different scenarios involving moves each team could make.  I won’t say what the results were because I’d rather not jinx myself, but the results were very close.  This is going to be a dual where the bonus points are big.  I would not be surprised if the teams split the number of matches each side wins or it goes eight to six in one team’s favor.  These teams are that close.  Both are solid up and down the lineup with few weak spots.  The only thing I think I am safe in saying is that it will be tighter than the dual with Tomah and that dual was one match away from an even split in terms of matches won by each team.  Bonus points people.  They will be big come tomorrow night.

Still no word about the live blog.  You may see a live blog window up here tonight, but that is just for testing purposes.  I’ll be testing out updating the live blog with a mobile device so if you check out the live blog and see strange stuff going on, have no worries, it’s just us messing around.

So the schedule for tomorrow’s duals are as follows…  Sparta will wrestle Lodi at 6pm.  At the same time, River Valley will wrestle Delavan-Darien.  The winner of these two duals will wrestle at 8pm.  All duals will be at Wisconsin Dells High School.  The address for the high school is 520 Race Street and the phone number is 608.253.1461 should you have any questions.

Tomah Scouting Report

by Derek on January 31, 2010

Each year, we try to do a scouting report of Tomah before the big dual.  This year is no different.  Below is a snapshot of how each of Tomah’s varsity wrestlers did at a few tournaments this year.  It’s not a complete picture, but it should give an idea of where we can expect their wrestlers to possibly move around during the dual with Sparta.  We’ll also discuss any previous matchups between wrestlers likely to faceoff Tuesday night.  Let’s kick if off!

103  –  Here we have one of Tomah’s better wrestlers in Tanner Dworak.  The sophomore has racked up a record of 24-4 as of two weeks ago.  Dworak was 2nd at the Tomah Scramble, 3rd at Bi-State, 1st at Nekoosa and 5-0 at the Wausau East Duals.  We could also see Patrick Adler, the younger brother of Tomah’s Zurik Adler.

This. Is. Sparta.

112  –  Zurik Adler has held down this weight for most of the past few seasons in Tomah.  He had a record of 24-4 as of two weeks ago.  On the season, Adler placed 1st at the Tomah Scramble, 7th at Bi-State, 1st at the Nekossa Invite and 4-1 at the Wausau East Duals.  Zurik lost a very entertaining match last year against Adam Wiedl in Sparta.  Adler got his revenge at regionals beating Weidl 12-10.  We could also see Tanner Dworak or Skylar McCarthy at this weight class.  Against Holmen, Zurik Adler moved all the way up to 125.

119  –  Here Skylar McCarthy has been the mainstay.  McCarthy placed 7th at the Tomah Scramble, did not place at Bi-State, 6th at the Nekoosa Invite while going 4-1 between the 112 and 119 pound weight classes at the Wausau East Duals.  McCarthy has wrestled 112, 119 and 125 pounds this year.  With Adler having wrestled 125 pounds against Holmen, he could also show up at this weight class.  Through the Nekoosa Invite two weeks ago, McCarthy had an 8-15 record.

125/130  –  These weights have been in flux for Tomah this year with guys moving up, down, in, out and around.  The three likely guys to show up at these weights are Damion Reekie, Nathan Jacco and Mike Linehan.  Reekie placed 3rd at the Tomah Scramble (125), did not place at Bi-State (125), 2nd at the Nekoosa Invite (125) while going 5-0 at the Wausau East Duals (130).  Jacco did not place at the Nekoosa Invite (125) while going 1-4 at the Wausau East Duals (125).  Linehan was 4th at the Tomah Scramble (130), did not place at Bi-State (130) and did not wrestle at the Nekoosa Invite or Wausau East Duals.  Last year he defeated Derek VonRuden by fall in 3:31 at 119 pounds during the dual in Sparta.  At the end of the Nekoosa Invite Jacco was 0-3 and Reekie was 13-8 on the year.

A Timberwolf in the wild.

135  –  This weight has belonged to Derrick Scott for most of the year.  Scott placed 6th at the Tomah Scramble, 11th at Bi-State, 2nd at the Nekoosa Invite while going 4-1 at the Wausau East Duals.  Scott pinned Logan Denasha last year at this same weight class in 3:03.  Scott had a record of 19-9 through the Nekoosa Invite.

140  –  Joey Organ has owned this spot for most of the year and had a record of 24-5 as of two weeks ago.  Organ placed 3rd at the Tomah Scramble, 5th at Bi-State and 3rd at the Nekoosa Invite while going 5-0 at the Wausau East duals.  Organ upset Jordan Stanek last year at 152 pounds by a score of 4-1.  Along with Tanner Dworak and Zurik Adler, Organ is one of the better wrestlers for Tomah.  Jacob Dubord has also wrestled at this weight for Tomah.

145  –  This weight has belonged to Jacob Dubord for the most part.  Dubord placed 6th at the Tomah Scramble, did not place at Bi-State (152) and did not wrestle at Nekoosa while going 5-0 at the Wausau East duals.  Tyler VonHaden has also made an appearance here, but Dubord appears to be the guy for this weight class.

152  –  Connor Genrich has been at this weight class only recently.  In many of the tournaments, he wrestled at 160 pounds, but the last three MVC duals, Genrich has been wrestling here so we’ll give him this spot.  Genrich did not wrestle at the Tomah Scramble, did not place at Bi-State (160) and placed 6th at the Nekoosa Invite while going 0-4 at the Wausau East Duals (160).  As of two weeks ago, he had a record of 2-7. During last year’s dual against Sparta, he lost 14-4 to Morgan Leis.  It would not be a surprise at all for him to move up to 160 pounds.  Tyler VonHaden has also wrestled at this weight class.

160  –  Tyler VonHaden has wrestled here in recent weeks so we are going to suggest this is his weight class.  Earlier in the year he wrestled at 145 and 152 pounds so he could make an appearance at 145, 152 or 160 but recent results suggest 160 pounds.  At the Tomah Scramble, he placed 3rd (152), 7th at Bi-State (145) and 1st at the Nekoosa Invite (152) while going 4-1 at the Wausau East Duals (152).  As of two weeks ago, his record was 24-5.  Last year defeated Derek McDonald 12-8 at 130 pounds after McDonald moved up three weight classes from 112, which probably made the difference.  Connor Genrich could also make an appearance here.

171  –  This weight has belonged to Ross Lynch.  Ross placed 7th at the Tomah Scramble, did not place at Bi-State and at the Nekoosa Invite placed 3rd while going 2-3 at the Wausau East Duals.  As of two weeks ago, Lynch’s record was 16-8.  Last year against Sparta, Brandon Brueggen defeated Lynch by a score of 6-4.

189/215  –  Josh VonHaden and Mike VonHaden have held down these weight classes all year.  Mike VonHaden placed 4th at the Tomah Scramble (215), did not place at Bi-State (215) and placed 5th at the Nekoosa Invite (215) while going 3-2 at the Wausau East Duals (215).  As of two weeks ago, he had a record of 9-13.  Josh VonHaden did not wrestle at the Tomah Scramble, did not place at Bi-State or the Nekoosa Invite and went 2-3 at the Wausau East Duals all at 189 pounds.  While Mike has primarily wrestled at 215 and Josh at 189, the two could be interchangeable.  We could also see Devin L’Herault here who placed 4th at 285 at the Tomah Scramble.

285  –  This has been a crapshoot all year long for Tomah with the Timberwolves trying out multiple guys at this weight class with some having little or no wrestling experience.  The two likely candidates here are Lucas Stromberg-Windau or Devin L’Herault.  Dylan Griffin and Justin Plevell have also made appearances here.  Because of the dynamic nature of this weight class for Tomah, I won’t get into all the records for each tournament, but it is one of the question marks in Tomah’s lineup, which is odd to say after four years of Josh VanGundy.

==========

Sparta’s lineup this year reminds me of the Tomah lineups from the past few years, which are solid wrestlers up and down the lineup and no really weak holes.  Tomah has a few holes this year, but still retain a number of very good wrestlers.  Here is a very basic breakdown of the above information…

STRONG WEIGHTS:  103, 112, 135, 140, 160, 171

As always, things change and guys who have not even wrestled a varsity match all year could make their debut Tuesday evening.  And records always seem to mean nothing when these two teams meet.

Will Sparty get his revenge this year?
