Not much has changed with the rankings in the past month. Things are solidifying much like they did last year and look almost the same when it comes to team rankings at least.
On the team side, Sparta is ranked 8th in the Wisconsin Wrestling Online division two poll, which is the same they have been since early December. The Crossface polls did not look as favorably on Sparta this time around as the Spartans dropped two places to 10th in D2. The Wisconsin Wrestling Online polls has historically been a little friendlier to the Spartans.
On the individual side, Derek VonRuden is an honorable mention, Nick Winchel is 11th, Toby Mosley is 8th, Morgan Leis is an honorable mention and Tom Tourdot remains the top-ranked wrestler at 215 pounds. Crossface only does a preseason ranking and then a midseason ranking so no change came out of their polls.
Again, going into the tournament season, the top teams on Sparta’s radar continue to be River Valley and Lodi. Viroqua and Adams-Friendship are in Sparta’s regional, but the Spartans finished almost 100 points ahead of Viroqua at a tournament earlier this year and I don’t think Adams-Friendship has the firepower to matchup. Should the Spartans win the team title at regionals, that takes us to sectionals where it looks like Sparta would face River Valley right off the bat. River Valley is ranked 12th in the Wisconsin Wrestling Online poll and are an honorable mention according to Crossface. If they beat River Vallery, all signs point toward another showdown with Lodi.

Wisconsin Wrestling Online just released their latest rankings and their are some new Spartan faces in the mix. On the team side, the Spartans held their place at 8th in Division Two. Holmen (honorable mention D1), River Valley (11th D2) and Weston/Ithaca (5th D3) are other ranked teams that the Spartans either defeated in duals or finished ahead of in tournaments.
At 125 pounds, Derek VonRuden is Sparta’s new entry into the rankings. VonRuden is an honorable mention. One weight class up at 130 pounds, Nick Winchel is also an honorable mention while at 145 pounds, Toby Mosley is ranked 12th. Tom Tourdot retained the top overall ranking at 215 pounds for the second straight poll. Oddly, Aquinas’ Lucas Shappell dropped three spots to 6th in D3 after defeating Tourdot one week ago. Also, Morgan Leis dropped completely out of the rankings despite not suffering any major losses. I think this just goes to show you that nothing really matters until you get to the Kohl Center in late February.
You can see the team rankings by clicking here. If you’d like to see the individual rankings, then click here for those.
Spartan alum Joel Dutton’s Kenosha Tremper Trojans come in at 11th in D1. Dutton has five of his kids in the rankings including Tyler Rice at 112 pounds who is a sophomore and ranked third and Dominic Garcia at 125 pounds who is a junior and ranked second. Finally, at 145 pounds, Levi Horton comes in at 5th overall. That’s three kids in the top 5 for a program that is steadily improving year after year. Nice job Joel!!

According to Wisconsin Wrestling Online, Sparta is ranked 8th in Division two. Holmen, who the Spartans defeated 35-27 last week, is an honorable mention in Division One according to the same poll. Below are the full rankings for Division two…
- Ellsworth
- Oconto Falls
- Luxemburg-Casco
- Pewaukee
- Lodi
- Tomahawk
- Campbellsport
- Sparta
- Marshall
- River Valley
- Kewaskum
- Winneconne
Honorable mention: Neillsville, Amery, Delavan-Darien, Freedom, Sheboygan Falls and Seymour
Sparta may have to deal with a number of ranked teams if they wish to advance to the state team tournament. Currently, no ranked or honorable mention teams are in the same regional as the Spartans. However, things get sticky after that.
Lodi, Marshall and River Valley are in the other regionals. Lodi and Marshall are in the same regional so one of those teams will be eliminated. My guess is that Lodi will advance. Out of the Belleville/Monticello/New Glarus regional, I’m not sure who the top team is there, but none of them are currently in the rankings. Monroe does come out of that regional and they gave the Spartans a good run for the money.
My guess for who will advance to the four-team Mauston sectional, and this is extremely premature since we are just a couple weeks into the season, are Sparta, Lodi, River Valley and Monroe. After that, who knows what happens.

Crossface Magazine has released their preseason rankings and have the Spartans as an honorable mention in Division Two. The full rankings are below…
1. Oconto Falls
2. Ellsworth
3. Luxemburg-Casco
4. Lodi
5. Pewaukee
6. River Valley
7. Kewaskum
8. Delavan-Darien
Honorable Mention: Seymour, Campbellsport, Tomahawk, Freedom, Sparta, Sheboygan Falls, Marshall
Lodi, River Valley and Marshall are all in Sparta’s sectional at Mauston this year.
I think Sparta has the chops to advance into the rankings again this year in D2. It will be hard to replace the 130+ wins that Tourdot, Stanek and Wiedl earned last year, but Sparta still returns eight guys with 30+ win potential. Five guys with 30 or more wins return while Bryce Nowaczyk (29 wins), Brandon Rickert (27) and Toby Mosley (24) are back healthier, stronger and ready to wrestle full seasons and should reach the 30-win level if they do their jobs. In other words, this is once again a very talented team with the ability to do some damage.

After Adam Wiedl’s impressive performance at sectionals, he now finds himself ranked 5th in division two at 112 pounds according to Wisconsin Wrestling Online. His victories included a 9-2 victory over Austyn Alt (39-8) of River Valley and a 12-10 win over Daniel Banh of Clinton (40-2). Banh was ranked 2nd coming into the weekend and entered the tournament with a 40-0 record while Alt was ranked 5th coming into the tournament.
At 119 pounds, Brandon Rickert enters the rankings at 8th. He lost a very close 4-3 match to the top-ranked wrestler in Bob Donar. Before sectionals, Rickert was unranked. Matt Tourdot continues to hold down the top ranking at 215 pounds while Jordan Stanek holds onto the no. 8 ranking at 189 pounds.
