This dual was never in question. Onalaska forfeited five matches and Sparta picked up five pins and major decisions in every other match en route to a 76-0 victory over the Hilltoppers. It was the Spartans’ first shut out since the 2009-10 season when the Sparta also blanked Onalaska 81-0. It’s ironic that on the day an article in the La Crosse Tribune examines Sparta’s great participation levels, they run into a team who just can’t seem to wrestle an entire lineup. Full results are below…

Sparta improves to 22-0 all-time against Onalaska in MVC competition. On the year, the Spartans are now 3-0 in the MVC and 9-0 overall. The Spartans will wrestle this weekend at the Stevens Point Dual Tournament before coming back and preparing for a showdown in Holmen on Thursday. A full preview of that dual will be on the blog early next week. Since the dual will be in Holmen, we probably won’t have a full-scale live blog like we normally do, but we will run a live blog that will not be accepting questions and will just be updating scores after every period or after every match. It will have to be done off a mobile device so doing updates on the level that is typically seen is just not feasible. However, we will try to get you the next best thing, which is letting you know the outcomes of matches as soon as they happen. More on that to come.
Sparta cruised to a 76-6 thumping of Onalaska Thursday evening in Onalaska. The Spartans won 13 of 14 matches including five by forfeit and seven by pin. The only match of the night that didn’t go the Spartans’ way was Andy Amundson’s pin of Greg Skon at 160. Otherwise it was all Spartans, all night.
Here are individual results from Thursday’s dual…
103 – Dylan Winchel pinned Tyler Wood (Onalaska) 0:43
112 – Tristan Zurfluh pinned Morgen Mueller (Onalaska) 2:31
119 – Bryce Nowaczyk pinned Andy Archenreiner (Onalaska) 1:30

285 – Chris Beeler pinned Matt Hayter (Onalaska) 4:29
FINAL: Sparta 76 – Onalaska 6
With the win, the Spartans improve to 4-0 in the MVC and 13-2 overall. The Spartans will now prepare for their own invite Saturday at the high school. Due to leaked pipes destroying the floor of the old gym at Sparta High, the entire tournament will be run in the new gym and only one break will happen throughout the day. The constant action will be needed to compensate for the loss of the old gym, which accommodated two mats.
I’ll be adding some photo galleries over the next week from the dual with Onalaska, the Spartan Invite and the Rochester Tournament. Today, you can see a few photos from the dual against Onalaska that ended with an 80-0 Spartan victory. Check that out below…
We’ve also updated the Coulee Region Power Rankings after the dual with Tomah. Sparta remains on top, but New Lisbon has slipped past Tomah. We could go either way with No. 2 between New Lisbon and Tomah, but based off Sparta’s dual with Tomah and how New Lisbon fared at the Spartan Invite, we’re going to give the edge to New Lisbon. Check them out to the right.
Finally, we plan on bringing you a number of articles from alums Steve Kimpel and Terry Smith this week detailing everything from training and nutrition to what it means to be a Spartan. There will be some good stuff so don’t miss out.
There wasn’t much action Thursday night, but when Sparta did step on the mat, they won every match. The Spartans annihilated the Hilltoppers of Onalaska 80-0 in the second biggest margin of defeat in the history of this rivalry. Sparta won 81-0 during the 2007-08 season. There were two JV matches–one wrestled before the start of the varsity match and one at the end. Sparta used seven forfeits along with five pins to improve to 15-0 on the year and 4-0 in the MVC.
Here are the individual results…

==========
The win tonight matches the best start in school history for the Spartans. Sparta started out 15-0 during the 2003-04 season and went onto finish 15-1. Sparta has a chance to eclipse that mark a week from now at home against La Crosse Central.
Next up for the Spartans is the Spartan Invite. With teams like Marshfield, Reedsburg, New Lisbon, Neillsville and Holmen, there should be some very good wrestling. Check back here tomorrow for a preview of this weekend’s Spartan Invite.
I know this is a little late, but here are the individual results as provided by Pat Stevenson from Saturday’s Stevens Point Dual Tournament where the Spartans went 5-0 on the day to capture their third tournament title of the year…
103 – Bryce Nowaczyk – 3-2
112 – Adam Wiedl – 5-0
119 – Brandon Rickert – 4-1
125 – Nick Winchel – 4-1
130 – Derek VonRuden – 3-2
135 – Michael Murnane – 2-3
140/45 – Logan Denasha – 3-2
140/45 – Jesse Amundson – 2-3
152 – Morgan Leis – 5-0
160 – Tom Tourdot – 1-4
171 – Brandon Brueggen – 2-3
189 – Jordan Stanek – 5-0
215 – Matt Tourdot – 5-0
285 – Steve Stevenson – 4-1
The five dual victories on Saturday put Sparta off to one of its best starts in school history. If they win tomorrow night at home against Onalaska–they have never lost to the Hilltoppers since the MVC was formed–they will match the 15-0 start of the 2003-04 squad that was the best in Spartan history. That team went on to the state team semifinals while still in Division One and finish 15-1.
While tomorrow’s dual may be one of the shortest of the year, it’s a good chance to stop by and say hello to the coach of that 2003-04 team in Lyle Blum. Blum has been coaching the past couple years in Onalaska after moving there to be closer to home and family and is trying very hard to build a program from the ground up.
Also, there will be no live blog of tomorrow’s dual. We do plan on having live blogs for the La Crosse Central dual and hopefully for the dual in Tomah.
