At 119, Bryce Nowaczyk won his consolation semifinal by pin in 2:24 while Derek VonRuden lost his first match of the tournament in the semfinals and is guaranteed at least 4th place.  At 130 pounds, Derek VonRuden also lost in the seminfals after being caught right off the bat and stuck in 16 seconds.

At 135 pounds, Paul VanTassel dropped his consolation semifinal match 7-3 while at 140, Michael Murnane fell in the semifinals 9-1.  A weight class higher at 145 pounds, Toby Mosley was shutout against 17-0 Michael Rodgers of St. Clair.  At 152 pounds, Morgan Leis fell to another undefeated wrestler by a score of 11-3.  At 160 pounds, Alex Hemmersbach’s day is done after he won his 11th place bout by forfeit.

Teamwise, the Spartans are sitting in 2nd place with 715 points, 106 points back of Deer Creek who now have 821 points.  In third place and only 16 points back of the Spartans is St. Charles West and in 4th place, 54 points back of the Spartans, is Kirksville.  Sparta has a great chance to improve upon last year’s third place showing and they might do it without an individual champion.

This will be the last update before the final update covering how each wrestler did.  Check back here in a few hours to get each wrestler’s record on the weekend, Sparta’s team score and how each Spartan did in every single match of the tournament.

3:00 pm —  Through six rounds, the Spartans continue to put up impressive numbers on a team and individual basis.  On the team side of things, Sparta sits in second place with 634 points while Deer Creek continues to lead the tournament with 699 points.  In third place, 10 points back of the Spartans, is St. Charles West.

Individually, the Spartans continue to see success.  In the quarterfinals, Dylan Winchel and Tristan Zurfluh were pinned in the first period of their matches.  At 119, Bryce Nowaczyk won his consolation quarterfinal by decision.

Sparta’s Matt Tourdot won his weight bracket and nine others Spartans finished in the top 10 of their weight bracket in the 37-team tournament Friday and Saturday in Harrisonville to boost Sparta to a 3rd place overall team finish with 727 points.  The Spartans were 183.5 points back of champion Kirksville who currently own the top ranking in the Missouri Class AA rankings.  Between Kirksville and Sparta and finishing second was Seneca with 869.5 points.  The Spartans were able to maintain their hold on third place by finishing just 7.5 points ahead of Brookfield.  The 7.5 points was a smaller margin than what it sounds like in a tournament where points were plentiful.

Matt Tourdot didn’t see much action until the finals.  In his six matches before reaching the finals, Tourdot never made it out of the first period going as far as 1:35 in the semifinals.  In the finals, he met 24-0 Devin Snow of Pleasant Hill who came into the tournament as the top-ranked wrestlers in Missouri’s Class AA.  That didn’t matter to Tourdot as he shutuout Snow 4-0 in the finals to cap off an 8-0 weekend that included six first period pins.

At 189 pounds, Jordan Stanek finished 3rd going 7-1 over two days.  Other high finishers for the Spartans included Adam Wiedl (4th), Nick Winchel (9th), Toby Mosley (4th), Derek VonRuden (6th), Morgan Leis (9th), Tom Tourdot (6th), Brandon Brueggen (8th) and Steven Stevenson (8th).  Stevenson was in a weight bracket that included eight state qualifiers from a year ago so his finish is all the more impressive.

Check out full records, places and other stats for the tournament below.  Match-by-match results for every wrestler are available here as well.

Next up for Sparta is the Badger State Invite in Madison on Wednesday, December 23rd.  The invite, hosted by the 8th ranked Stoughton Vikings, will be the final dual before Christmas and should feature a good and tough variety of in-state competition that the Spartans don’t normally see.

Sparta aims for top three finish…

by Derek on December 19, 2009

While it’s not out of the question, it will be a very tough task for the Spartans to win the Harrisonville Christmas tournament.  With 595.5 points, the Spartas currently occupy third place.  That score puts them 150 points back of leader Kirksville (749.5) and 104 points back of second place Seneca (699.5).  However, they hold a comfortable 88 point lead over fourth place Deer Creek (507.5).  Keep searching Harrisonville Christmas Tournament at Trackwrestling.com for the for the latest team scores and individual updates.

Individually, the Spartans are running into some stiffer competition, but a number of Spartans still boast some impressive records through six rounds.  Toby Mosley, Tom Tourdot, Jordan Stanek and Matt Tourdot are all at 6-0 on the weekend with the exception of Tom Tourdot who is currently 5-0.  Brandon Brueggen, Adam Weidl and Steven Stevenson all have only one loss.  Bryce Nowaczyk (3-3), Nick Winchel (4-2), Derek VonRuden (4-2), Logan Denasha (4-2), Nick Anderson (2-3) and Morgan Leis (3-2) all are still capable of finishing in the top half of the 37 team tournament.

Check back here late tonight or early tomorrow morning for a full update on how Sparta finished.
