Chippewa Falls

Sparta won the first nine matches of the night to go up 42-0 and then coasted the rest of the way for a decisive 48-23 victory over the Chippewa Falls Cardinals Thursday evening in Sparta.  Sparta won a number of close matches early on to set the tone for the night while also picking up six pins to cement the victory.  After falling behind 42-0 through nine weight classes, the Cardinals began picking up some points in the lower weights.

The Cardinals’ 119-pounder Isaac Balsiger, who was third at 103 pounds in Division One last year, looked impressive in a victory over Spartan senior Adam Wiedl.  Wiedl is going to be tough this year, but Balsiger is also going to be one of the best wrestlers the Spartans run into all season long.  At 125 pounds, Nick Winchel looked impressive picking up a second-period pin a year after suffering a season-ending injury at the Reedsburg Invitational.

The most exciting match of the night was the opening match at 130 pounds between Sparta’s Toby Mosely and the Cardinals’ Josh Reedy.  After the first period, the score was pretty tight with Reedy holding a 4-3 advantage.  Reedy was down to start the first and immediately escaped, took Mosely down for two and picked up three near fall points.  Before long, it was 10-4 Reedy and things were looking down for Mosely.  The period ended with Mosely down 10-3.

Things immediately changed and Mosely came to own the third period.  Mosely picked up two takedowns, a nearfall and before long the score was 11-9 Reedy with 20 seconds left.  A takedown by Reedy and a quick escape by Mosely was followed up with a takedown and two-point nearfall in the final seconds to give Mosely the 15-13 victory.  It was an exciting start to the year and set the tone for the night as Sparta won a number of matches in the final seconds.
