Spartans rout Rangers 63-9

Spartan 106-pounder Blake Brooks pinned his opponent in 16 seconds.

Sparta won 12 of 14 matches to defeat La Crosse Logan 63-9 at home Thursday evening.  Seven Spartans prevailed by pin, two more by forfeit and the rest by decision as the Spartans improved to 3-0 on the year and 2-0 in the MVC.

The Rangers held the briefest of leads after opening up with a 7-3 victory at 126 pounds as Logan’s Paul Bartel defeated Thomas Treu 7-3.  Down 3-0, the Spartans would win the next nine matches to open up a 45-3 lead before Gabe Dearman fell by pin at 285.

Picking up pins for the Spartans were Kyle Erickson, Jaden Winchel, Mathias Krein, Hayden Krein, Austin Zweifel, Blake Brooks and Jakob Larson.  Jon Bailey and Jack Ruedy won by forfeit while David Hayes, Brett Von Ruden and Matt Fahning all picked up decisions.

In the first two MVC duals of the year, the Spartans have outscored their opponents 130-15 while winning 24 of 28 matches–including 11 by pin.  It’s been a good start to the MVC season for the Spartans.  Full match-by-match results are below…

The Spartans are off for a week before returning to action at the Bi-State Classic next Thursday and Friday at the La Crosse Center.  It will be Sparta’s first tournament action since the Battle on the Bay on December 10th.  Due to inclement weather, the Spartans were unable to travel to last weekend’s tournament at Badger State.  That date will be made up in the form of a tri-meet with La Crescent and Caledonia on Thursday, January 26th.  Sparta will wrestle each team that night so two duals with action beginning at 530pm.
