Jaden Winchel (top) and John Roddick (bottom) were individual champs at the 2015 Sparta Invite.

The writing was on the wall from the very beginning.  Nobody was going to stop the Spartans from claiming the 2015 Sparta Invite championship.  After a round of action, the Spartans had a nearly 50 point lead as the team went 18-3 through the quarterfinal round. They would send five more wrestlers ahead with victories in the semis and two would end the day as champions.

As has been the story all year long, nobody was going to tell the Spartans that they needed a full team to dominate the competition.  Without wrestlers at 195, 220 and 285, Sparta ran away with the team championship scoring 208 points followed by DeForest with 171.5 and Holmen with 161 points.

Leading the way for the Spartans were individual champions John Roddick and Jaden Winchel.  Roddick had an impressive overtime victory over the defending division three state champion at 113 pounds in Weston/Ithaca’s Hunter Dischler.  Dischler went 42-5 last year and won his state title match 17-5.  It was an impressive victory for the senior 126-pounder who has been wrestling particularly well over the last few weeks.

Not to be outdone, sophomore Jaden Winchel improved to 35-0 on the year by making quick work of Princeton’s Payton Hall to win the 132 pound bracket.  Winchel’s four matches all ended in pins with times of 0:21, 1:04, 3:41 and 2:18.

Also advancing to the finals were Brett VonRuden, Brock Polhamus and Hayden Krein.  All three ran into tough competition and finished second. VonRuden lost to Adams-Friendship’s Cole Clark (32-3), Polhamus to Cole Martin (31-1) for the second time this month and Krein to DeForest’s Jackson Hemauer (29-4).  Hemauer defeated Polhamus in the finals of last year’s Sparta Invite.

Every Spartan finished in the top six with David Hayes and Ryan Wisniewski finishing 3rd, Logan VanTassel 4th, Corey Zimmerman and Sam Forbes 5th and Walker Polhamus 6th.  The Spartans now have four wrestlers with over 30 wins on the year and another three that will likely reach that mark very soon.

The Spartans are off until Thursday when they battle arch-rivals Tomah at home.  Lots to come regarding that dual.

A summary of each Spartan wrestler’s day is below.
