Sparta improved to 3-0 in the MVC and 4-1 overall with a 43-27 victory over La Crosse Logan/Central Thursday evening in La Crosse. The Spartans won nine of 14 matches despite wrestling without Jon Bailey and Brett Von Ruden.
The Spartans won the first five matches with the upper weights picking up some big wins. Brothers Hayden and Mathias Krein won by forfeit and major decision respectively before Kelten Pfaff picked up an 8-2 victory at 182 followed by Marcus Cox edging Logan/Central’s Ethan Coleman 7-5 at 195. Garet Pfaff gave Sparta six more points to take a 22-0 lead with a first period pin in 1:10 at 220.
Logan/Central would pick up 12 points in the next two matches with pins at 285 and 106 before Vince Polhamus countered with a pin of his own at 113. At 120, it looked like Logan/Central would be picking up more bonus points as Samuel Matias-Escalante fell behind by as much as nine points before pinning Isaac Thompson. Logan/Central would pick up wins at 126 and 132 before Kyle Erickson and David Hayes rounded out the victories for the Spartans with wins at 138 and 145. Corbin Hauser fell to Christian Kapanke at 152 to round out the action.

There were four JV matches before Thursday’s dual and the Spartans won three of them. Gavin Haldeman went 2-0 while Madden Connelly went 1-1.

With the win, the Spartans are now 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the MVC. They have not lost to a La Crosse high school since losing to Logan during the 2005-06 season–a span of 36 duals.
There is little rest for the Spartans as they return to action tomorrow at the Lancaster Invitational. There will be no duals next week, but the weekend of the 13th will see the varsity at the Brookfield Central Scramble while the JV will travel to the Weston Varsity Invitational. After that, it’s the last home dual of the year and it’s a big one–Tomah on Thursday, January 18th.
