Senior John Roddick matched Matt Tourdot for the most wins in program history with his 159th. Roddick can set the record with a win against Logan on Thursday.

Sparta took one step closer to securing their second straight MVC championship Thursday evening while senior John Roddick tied Matt Tourdot for career victories.  Sparta’s 53-15 victory over Tomah was the Spartan’s sixth straight victory in the rivalry.  The 38-point victory was Sparta’s largest over the Timberwolves since a 54-9 victory during the 1993-94 season.  That win came during a seven-match winning streak against Tomah that lasted from the 1992-93 season through the 1997-98 season.  Sparta’s current winning streak against Tomah dates back to the 2009-10 season.

While there were many big victories on the night, none may have mattered more than John Roddick’s 37-second pin of Alaughn St. Germaine.  The win brought Roddick’s career win total to 159, which ties Matt Tourdot for the program record.  He can reach 160 wins and become the all-time program wins leader next week at La Crosse Logan.  Congratulations to John on an incredible accomplishment.

Another big victory happened one weight up at 132 pounds by Sparta’s Jaden Winchel.  Tomah’s Hunter Pierce entered the match with an impressive 32-5 record while being ranked 10th in division one at 132 pounds.  Pierce was also recently named the 2nd best wrestler in the area by the La Crosse Tribune.  None of that mattered to the sophomore Winchel who jumped on Pierce from the start and never let up.  Winchel earned a takedown less than 10 seconds into the match while Pierce looked completely overmatched.  Winchel would back up his top ranking in division two with a resounding 16-2 victory.

Other big wins included Brock Polhamus’ 6-1 victory over Casey Curran (14-5), Corey Zimmerman’s 3-0 victory against Tommy Repka (24-11), David Hayes’ 13-3 major decision over Bobby Bemis (19-12) and Walker Polhamus making quick work of Justice Blackhawk (17-15) with a pin in 1:45.

Sparta was again adept at picking up bonus points.  They earned six pins and two major decisions while winning 11 of 14 weight classes.  Picking up pins for the Spartans were John Roddick, Hayden Krein, Ryan Wisniewski, Logan VanTassel, Walker Polhamus and Austin Zwiefel.  Full match results are below…

The win pushed the Spartans’ dual record to 11-6 overall, 5-0 in the MVC and puts Coach Mike Roddick’s dual record at 1-0 against Coach Von Haden of Tomah.  Since going 0-5 at the Dells Duals Invitational, Sparta is 10-1 in duals.  It’s been an impressive stretch.  Congrats to the Spartans on another great victory over Tomah.  Sparta can wrap up its second straight MVC championship with a win over Logan on Thursday.  Twice in the history of the MVC Sparta has won back-to-back conference titles and that was during the 1992-93 and 1993-94, and 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.
