The Spartans finished second to host and D2 top-ranked Ellsworth Saturday at the Ellsworth Invitational. Senior Jaden Winchel lead the Spartans winning the 145-pound championship in dominating fashion while Jon Bailey, Brett Von Ruden, Hayden Krein and Austin Zwiefel all placed second for the Spartans.
Ellsworth ran away with the team championship earning 255.5 points. Sparta was second with 182.5 points and Dover-Eyota (Minnesota) third with 128 points. Finishing third for the Spartans was Blake Brooks, Kyle Erickson and Matt Fahning. David Hayes finished fourth.
To say Winchel was dominant at 145 pounds was an understatement. His first two matches ended in pins in 1:08 and 1:15 before he won the championship match via 13-2 major decision.
