Bailey lead the Spartans with a third place finish.

Jon Bailey and Hayden Krein lead the Spartans to a seventh place finish in division one and 15th overall at the 2017 edition of the Bi-State Classic.  Junior Jon Bailey and senior Hayden Krein fell just short of defending their Bi-State titles from last year with Bailey falling 4-3 in the semifinals to two-time MN Class A state champion Jeron Matson of Kenyon-Wanamingo.  At 160 pounds, Hayden Krein fell in the semis to Caledonia/Houston’s Zach Schneider.

David Hayes and Mathias Krein rounded out the placewinners for the Spartans with each finishing 9th.  At 152 pounds, Brett Von Ruden advanced to the semifinals and was in a tight match before questionable officiating lead to a disqualification.  Von Ruden finished the tournament 3-1 with three pins

While Bailey and Krein may have finished with the highest place, nobody on the team came close to David Hayes in number of matches won over the course of the tournament.  He came close to matching Kevin Dutton’s program record of nine wins in a single tournament, but ultimately went 7-2 over the two-day tournament.  In the early 1990s, Kevin Dutton lost his opening match of the tournament and won his next nine matches to place third and finish 9-1 over two days.  Hayes went 7-2.

As is usual with Jon Bailey, he was able to win a lot of close matches.  Wrestling for the first time this season at 120 pounds, Bailey won two of this final three matches with all three being decided by two points or less.  His semifinal loss was a 4-3 decision, while his consolation semifinal match was a 3-1 victory before winning 3-1 in sudden victory-one overtime in the third place match.

Significant wins during the tournament included…

  • Jon Bailey’s 8-0 victory over Melrose-Mindoro/G.E.T.’s Jack Marley (ranked 5th in D3 at 120)
  • Jon Bailey’s 3-1 victory over Belmont/Platteville’s Isaac Wiegel (ranked 2nd in D2 at 120)
  • Jon Bailey’s 3-1 SV-1 victory over Lodi’s Garrett Moll (ranked 4th in D2 at 126)
  • Brett Von Ruden’s pin in 1:31 over Prairie du Chien’s Tyler Smock (HM at 152 in D2)
  • Hayden Krein’s pin in 3:03 over Weston/Ithaca’s Colton Clary (ranked 8th in D3 at 170)
  • Hayden Krein’s 16-0 technical fall victory in 3:40 over New Lisbon’s Gunnar Pederson (ranked 9th in D3 at 152)
  • Hayden Krein’s 17-2 technical fall victory in 1:13 over Waunakee’s Ben Statz (HM at 170 in D1)
  • Hayden Krein’s 4-2 victory over Medford Area’s Kolten Hanson (ranked 2nd at 170 in D2)
  • Mathias Krein’s 8-4 victory over Luxemburg-Casco’s Jacon Zellner (HM at 170 in D2)
  • Mathias Krein’s 7-2 victory over Lodi’s Max Barreau (ranked 10th at 182 in D2)

Sparta’s finish was significant for a number of reasons.  The team is far from full-strength or healthy and the Spartans wrestled without anyone at 106.  Von Ruden’s questionable disqualification erased all of his team points meaning the Spartans might have finished even higher than 7th in D1 and 15th overall in the 61-team tournament.  At the same time, Bailey and Hayden Krein were incredibly close to winning the matches they lost, which could have meant more team points.

Meanwhile, Holmen dominated the team scores with 342 points, which was 22.5 points better than second-place Stratford.  The Vikings appear to be the real deal and are earning their top ranking in Wisconsin division one.  Area teams that also finished strong included Prairie du Chien (9th overall with 172.5 point), Viroqua (17th overall with 132.5 points) and Melrose-Mindoro/G.E.T. (18th overall with 126 points)

Jon Bailey (left) and Hayden Krein (right) will return to Bi-State to defend their 2016 titles.

The Spartans will have their work cut out for them if they wish to achieve the same team and individual success as they did last season at the Bi-State Classic.  In 2016, they finished first in division one, third overall and saw Jon Bailey capture his second Bi-State title and Hayden Krein his first.

As a team, the Spartans have not been wrestling at full strength and have not wrestled a tournament with a full team.  That should change going into 2018, but Bi-State will see another tournament without a full contingent of Spartan wrestlers.

Let’s check out some of the weights…

120
Jon Bailey will have a ton of work cut out for him if he wants to become a three-time Bi-State champion.  The bracket includes two Minnesota heavyweights in Kenyon-Wanamingo’s Jeron Matson who is a two-time Class A state champion.  Class A in Minnesota is the same as division three in Wisconsin while Class AAA is equivalent to division one.  Bailey may also have to face Stillwater’s Reid Ballantyne–the Minnesota AAA 106-pound state championship last year.

Joining Matson and Ballantyne is three-time state qualifier Isaac Wiegel from Belmont/Platteville.  Wiegel placed 3rd at 113 in D2 last year and fourth 106 in D2 in 2016.  Muskego’s Parker Bevilacqua finished 5th at 106 in D1 last year while Lodi’s Garrett Moll is a two-time D2 state qualifier.  Bailey is a two-time state placewinner finishing 3rd at 113 in 2017 and 4th at 106 in 2016.

Overall, there are 13 state placewinners in this bracket and nine former Bi-State medalists.

126
Another tough bracket, 126 pounds will feature two wrestlers with five state championships between them.  Luxemburg-Casco’s Bryce Bosman is a two-time D2 state champion while Stratford’s AJ Schoenfuss is a three-time state champion.  G.E.T/Melrose-Mindoro’s Julian Purney was a state finalist in D2 last year at 120 and finished second.

138
This bracket will be one to watch.  Three-time D3 state champion Jeremy Schoenherr should be the favorite, but three-time state placewinner Mason Phillips will not be an easy out.  Holmen’s Tanner Schultz is a two-time state qualifier and one of the top D1 wrestlers at 138 this season.  Between Minnesota and Wisconsin, this bracket will feature 11 state qualifying wrestlers with 22 state tournament appearance between them.

152
Brett Von Ruden tops all wrestlers in the 152-pound bracket with three state tournament appearances but he will face a tough battle with Middleton’s Kevin Meicher leading the way.  The Middleton junior was a state champion as a freshman in 2016 at 126 while finishing as a runner-up last year at 138 pounds.  Mauston’s Jarett Dolata finished 3rd last year at 138 in D2 while Goodhue, Minnesota’s Kelby O’Reilly was a 3rd place finisher at 138 pounds last year in Class A.

160
Hayden Krein is projected as the top seed as he will go for his second Bi-State title.  The three-time state placewinner and 2016 state champion is joined by three other three-time state qualifiers.  Iowa-Grant/Highland’s Max Maylor is the 2nd ranked wrestler in D3 at 160 this year and a two-time state placewinner finishing 3rd at 152 last year.  Other three-time state qualifiers include Medford’s Kolten Hanson and Hudson’s Jacob Anderson.  Anderson is ranked 4th at 160 in D1 while Hanson is ranked 2nd at 160 in D2.  Maylor is currently ranked 2nd at 160 in D3.

Overall numbers
The 2017 Bi-State Classic features 106 state qualifiers with 158 state tournament appearances, 73 podium finishes and 16 state championships.  There are only seven previous Bi-State champs wrestling this week and in many years where wrestlers finished the season with a state championship, they did not leave Bi-State as a champion.

When it comes to rankings, there will be 16 wrestlers ranked number one in their division or class with both 120 and 152 featuring three top-ranked wrestlers.  There are two top-ranked wrestlers at 126, 170 and 285.  On the whole, there are 45 wrestlers ranked in the top three of their weight class in either Wisconsin or Minnesota.

State champions include…

  • 120  –  Jeron Matson (2), Kenyon-Wanamingo, MN Class A 113 in 2017, 106 in 2016
  • 120  –  Reid Ballantyne (1), Stillwater, MN Class AAA 106 in 2017
  • 126  –  Bryce Bosman (2), Luxemburg-Casco, D2 113 in 2017, 106 in 2016
  • 126  –  AJ Schoenfuss (3), Stratford, D3 120 in 2017, 120 in 2016 and 106 in 2015
  • 138  –  Jeremy Schoenherr (3), Stratford, D3 138 in 2017, 126 in 2016 and 113 in 2015
  • 145  –  Ryan Hannah (1), Viroqua, D2 132 in 2016
  • 152  –  Kevin Meicher (1), Middleton, D1 126 in 2016
  • 160  –  Hayden Krein (1), Sparta, D1 152 in 2016
  • 170  –  Shane Liegel (1), River Valley, D2 160 in 2017
  • 220  –  Hunter Lupeke (1), Spencer/Columbus Catholic, D2 195 in 2017

It’s going to be a tough tournament and in many cases, it will probably be tougher to win the Bi-State Classic than the state tournament.

David Hayes captured the 145-pound championship at the Willard Schmidt Scramble.

Six Spartans advanced to the championship matches and three went home champions as the Spartans put up 413 team points Saturday to place second at the Willard Schmidt Scramble.  Seniors David Hayes, Brett Von Ruden and Hayden Krein all went undefeated and combined for nine pins while Kyle Erickson, Kelten Pfaff and Noah Benish all finished second.

The Spartans finished 30.5 points back on a day they were missing wrestlers at 106, 113, 132 and Jon Bailey at 126.  Bailey is expected back this week against Onalaska.

Finishing in 3rd place for the Spartans was Vince Polhamus, Mathias Krein and Garet Pfaff.  Hayden Krein and Pfaff both lead the team with four pins apiece while Kyle Erickson and Von Ruden had three pins.

Don’t get too carried away by seeing Sparta finish ahead of teams like division one top-ranked Kaukauna and division two top-ranked Luxemburg-Casco.  These were those teams JV squads.  Kaukauna was at the Minnesota Christmas Tournament while Luxemburg-Casco was off.

It was a good showing for the Spartans with some strong performances by Sparta’s upper weights by Kelten Pfaff, Marcus Cox, Garet Pfaff and Noah Benish.

At 160, Krein had a short day of wrestling.  All four of his matches ended via first period pin with none lasting longer than 1:14.

Senior Kyle Erickson made his varsity debut with a first period pin against Aquinas.

Aquinas held the briefest of leads Thursday night before the Spartans came roaring back on their way to a 56-15 victory over Aquinas.  On the night, the Spartans won 10 of 14 matches including six by pin and another by technical fall.  It was the 13th straight win for the Spartans in the series.  Sparta is now 25-4 all-time against Aquinas.

Things started out in Aquinas’ favor as the Blugolds’ Albert Flottmeyer caught sophomore Thomas Treu in the second period in a fluky pin.  That gave the Blugolds a brief lead as Kyle Erickson made his varsity debut by picking up a pin in 1:03.  That was followed by a David Hayes pin in 31 seconds to give the Spartans a lead they would not relinquish.

Sparta would add 18 more team points by the way of a forfeit to Von Ruden at 152 and second period pins by both Hayden and Mathias Krein at 160 and 170.  Kelten Pfaff followed up the Krein pin parade with a 12-6 decision that put the Spartans up 33-6 at the halfway point.  Aquinas would get back nine points with a pin at 195 and a close 4-3 victory by Jack Horihan over Garet Pfaff.  Last year, Horihan edged Pfaff in Sparta’s dual against Aquinas by a similarly close 5-4 margin.

Noah Benish stopped the streak of Aquinas wins with a pin at 285 before Luis Cruz-Cane won by forfeit at 106.  At 113, both teams forfeitted.  Vince Polhamus and Jon Bailey finished off the dual with a first period pin by Polhamus and technical fall victory in just 2:29 by the junior Jon Bailey.

It what is now the longest-running rivalry between Sparta and a La Crosse high school wrestling team after Logan and Central merged programs, the Spartans will wrestle Aquinas tonight in the 29th meeting between these two teams.  Sparta owns a 24-4 all-time record in the series with 12 straight wins in the series dating back to the 2005-06 season.  Last year, the Spartans defeated Aquinas 67-6 on the road.

Big thanks to Melissa Bailey for handling the live streaming duties once again.  Varsity action and streaming will begin around 7pm.  Go Spartans!

Wrestling without a full team, the Spartans finished in 8th place with 295 points at the 25-team Battle on the Bay in Bayport, Wisc.  Leading the way were champions Jon Bailey and Hayden Krein.  Brett Von Ruden finished 2nd while David Hayes was 4th to round out the Spartans who finished in the top 10.

Hayden Krein was absolutely dominant Saturday with three first period pins in his first three matches including two in under a minute.  His semifinal match was another victory by pin in 3:19 while the championship match was a 9-0 major decision victory.  At 126 pounds, Jon Bailey avenged a second-place finish last year by defeating Ashwaubenon’s Fernando Coronado in the championship.  Bailey was up four points before the match was ended due to blood time.

At 152 pounds, Brett Von Ruden lost a close 3-2 match in the finals to Rhinelander’s Jacob DeMeyer who is currently ranked 4th in division one at 160 pounds.

It was a strong finish in a loaded tournament for the Spartans despite wrestling without anyone at 106 and 113 and without a couple guys who are still recovering from injury or waiting until they can drop down due to new weight rules.

It has not been an easy three weeks of competition for the Spartans.  In the first three weeks of the season, Sparta has crossed paths with 10 of the top 16 teams from the 2017 WIAA Team State Tournament and that number will reach 16 by the end of the year.  The Spartans could travel to easier tournaments, but it’s this difficult competition that will get the Spartans ready for the important matches in February.

Significant wins on the day included…

  • Jon Bailey’s victory over Fernando Coronado who is currently ranked 7th at 132 in D1
  • Jon Bailey’s victory over Lucas Benn who is currently an honorable mention at 126 in D1
  • David Hayes’ 7-2 victory over Mukwonago’s Jake Schulte who is currently an honorable mention at 145 in D1
  • Brett Von Ruden’s pin in 5:19 over Muskego’s Evan Sinda who is currently ranked 5th at 152 in D1
  • Hayden Krein’s 9-0 victory in the finals over Luxemburg-Casco’s Devan Vandenbush is currently ranked 3rd at 170 in D2
  • Mathias Krein’s 13-4 major decision victory over Mukwonago’s Jacob Stachowski who is currently ranked 7th at 182 in D1

Three Spartans are ranked in the top three of the first Wisconsin Wrestling Online rankings released on Thursday while the Spartans are ranked eight as a team in division one.

At 126 pounds, junior Jon Bailey is the top-ranked wrestler in the state in division one.  It’s his first time atop the rankings and he is one spot ahead of Arrowhead’s Dominic Dentino.  Bailey defeated Dentino in the division one 120-pound third place match at the state tournament last year.  Jessie Tijerina (9th) and Dylan Herbrand (10th) are two other ranked wrestlers in the section at 126-pounds.

At 152 pounds, Brett Von Ruden finds himself with his highest ranking ever at third.  Spartan alum Joel Dutton’s son, Reese Dutton of Kenosha Tremper, is ranked 8th.  The top-ranked wrestler at 152 pounds is Middleton’s Kevin Meicher.  No other wrestlers in the section are ranked besides Meicher.

At 160 pounds, Hayden Krein debuts at second behind West Allis Hale’s Peyton Mocco.  Holmen’s Reed Williams (HM) and DeForest’s Austin Rauls (HM) are the only other ranked wrestlers in the section.

Spartan team in top 10

For the second year in a row, the Spartans debuted in the top ten of the first Wisconsin Wrestling Online rankings.  Sparta is ranked 8th while conference rival Holmen checks in at third.  The first two dual meets of the year for the Spartans were against teams in the rankings.  Marshfield is currently ranked 10th in division one while Fennimore is ranked 2nd in division three.
