Coach Rickert’s post-match comments on Sparta-Tomah

rickert-vs-holmen-2016Jared Rickert was kind enough to answer a few questions about last night’s victory against Tomah.

Tell us about the changes in the lineup you made vs Tomah and the reasoning behind them.

Brooks, Larson and Bailey are great assets to have in the lower weights.  The size and ability of all three give me flexibility to move them around.  I thought we had better match ups with putting Vince Polhamus in at 106 and moving those three up.  All accepted the challenge and rose to the occasion.  Very impressed with the way those guys wrestled.

What was the attitude of the team coming into the meet after last year’s upset?

I never mentioned last year’s match.  Although we all had a sour taste from last year’s result, it wasn’t a focal point of our preparation. We treated this event like any other.  As a coach I focused on match ups and let the kids focus on training and preparing.

How do you think the team is progressing as you head into the meat of the season?

I think we are right where we need to be.  The boys seem to have the right mindset.  Focusing on the present in order to reach your end goal.

What areas concern you the most and what things are you most happy about?

Success aside, this is a great group of young men.  They are willing to do whatever it takes to be better.  We have come a long way as a team, even from the beginning of the season.  It is exciting to think of what they have accomplished and what they are still set out to do.

As we go through January we need to stay focused on our health and nutrition.  These are key components to avoiding sickness and injury.
