Middle School Wrestling

The Sparta Middle School wrestling team competed in a dual tournament at Neillsville Saturday, Dec. 3. The team finished a very impressive 2nd, losing to powerful Wisconsin Rapids 34-33 in the championship match. The little Spartans built a 33-13 lead but couldn’t hold on as Rapids finished strong with the help of a Spartan forfeit at heavyweight.

The team opened the round robin dual tournament by defeating DC Everest 45-16, in the second round they defeated Cadott 44-15, and in the third round rolled over Stanley-Boyd/Thorp 60-12.

Finishing 4-0 on the day were: Greg Jacobs, David Hayes, Christian Lamon, Jaden Winchel and Haydn Bernett. All of the wrestlers did an outstanding job throughout the day and represented Sparta very very well. It was a great experience for the young wrestlers and gave them a taste of the excitement of team competition. Other wrestlers competing were: Derick Dahlby, James Lemoine, Dylan and Brady Hansen, Logan Johnson, Jasiah Scott, Devon Smith, Gabe Lamon, Nick Swiatly, Ryan Wisniewski and Trygve Zurfluh.

The Middle School wrestlers will head to Neillsville this Saturday for a team tournament and then to West Salem on Monday for a conference meet with Holmen, West Salem and Viroqua. The Neillsville tournament will follow a team dual format with specific weight classes. It should be a good experience for our wrestlers in dual meet competitions. The tournament begins at 9:30 AM.

Due to the large numbers on our team we have been having some very long conference meets and this has been an area of concern for us and our parents this season. Unfortunately it has caused long nights and limited matches for our wrestlers. The only solution is to split our team and go to different meets on the same night. It is too late in the season to be done this year but will be something that we can begin with to start upcoming seasons.

Greater opportunities for matches will exist at the upcoming Marshfield and Viroqua tournaments. We have also added a dual at Holmen on Thursday, December 15 for our more experienced wrestlers, that will begin at 5:00 PM at Holmen HS.

The coaches are thankful to the parents and wrestlers for their understanding and support as we work through this season.

What a great start to the wrestling season! Over sixty 6th through 8th grade wrestlers have started the middle school season. With the large number of wrestlers this season there will be some scheduling on the fly as we try to get enough competition for all. Our season opens up next Monday, November 14 at Winona. We will try to keep everything updated and current on this site so please check often. Schedules for meets and practices will be posted soon.

Coaches this season are: Scott Zurfluh, Mike Montgomery, Heath Hauser, and Nick Winchel. Also volunteer assisting are Mike Todryk and Xavier Lopez.

by Derek on December 27, 2010

The 2010 Spartan Middle School Wrestling Team. Click to see a larger version.

The Sparta middle school wrestling team wrapped up their 2010 season on December 18th at Viroqua.  It was a solid season for the Spartans and it looks to be a bright future for the high school program.  Overall as a team, the Spartans won 310 matches and lost 213.  One wrestler (Brock Polhamus) topped the 20-win mark with a 20-3 record while seven more wrestlers cracked the 15-win mark.  Another five wrestlers finished with just one or two losses.

Below are the records at Viroqua followed by each wrestler’s season record.  For example, “Connor Bernett, 1-2, 4-10″ meant that Connor Bernett went 1-2 at Viroqua and finished 4-10 on the year.  Simple enough?  Ok, let’s get to it…

Ryan Leis, 0-3, 12-10
Justin Marx, 0-0, 8-8
Brock Polhamus, 2-1, 20-3
Walker Polhamus, 0-3, 17-8
Christian Reiter, 1-2, 4-8
John Roddick, 3-0, 19-2
Corey Zimmerman, 3-0, 17-2

Some of these wrestlers will now continue their wrestling through area rec programs such as Sparta Rec or Lacrosse Area Wrestlers (LAW).  There might be a chance to catch some of these guys at the Sparta Youth Tournament on Sunday, January 23rd at Sparta High School.  That is the day after the Spartan Invite.  If you want to check out a lot of action of all levels of Spartan wrestling, that would be a good weekend to find yourself up at the high school.

Congrats to the middle school on a great season and a big thanks to Mike Roddick for supplying this information!

Middle School Updates…

by Derek on December 17, 2010

The middle school season is already nearing its end and I was able to email coach Mike Roddick and ask him to say a few words about how the season has gone.  Here is what he has to say…

We have a great group of middle school wrestlers this year.  They are talented, been working hard, and we have great numbers with 33 students in wrestling this year.

Most all of our 8th graders have been with us for all 3 years in middle school, with one new comer who is naturally a strong wrestler.  We have a total of 12 wrestlers in 8th grade this year who are showing great leadership and wrestling well. We have 7 wrestlers in the 7th grade, 4 are returning wrestlers and 3 are new to the program.  There is a lot of talent and a lot of hard workers in this group.

As for the 6th graders, we have 14 participants.  There are 8 wrestlers who wrestled a lot in the youth program and the balance are in their first or second years.  There are a lot of 6th graders who are very talented.  The one’s with limited experience work hard and are learning a lot.

Combined as a team, we have a lot more individual wins than losses and we are 4 and 1 in middle school dual meets.  Wins and losses are only one way to measure success.  Coach Zufluh, Weidl and myself prefer to focus on instilling a love of wrestling and teaching the kids how to believe in themselves and work extremely hard, while at the same time being respectful and kind when off the mat.

The thing that young wrestlers least understand is that wrestling needs to be a way of life.  They need to eat, drink and breathe wrestling if they are to reach their full potential.  They need to search websites such as flowrestling, subscribe to and read wrestling magazines, practice, condition and eat healthy almost daily (year around), read fiction and nonfiction stories related to wrestling, and keep out the social forces that try to tear them away from such things.

If this group of middle school wrestlers choose to make the sacrifices and commitments necessary to hone their skills, they will be a force to be reckoned with at the varsity level down the road.

- Mike Roddick

If you ask me, sounds like Sparta Wrestling will be able to continue the success of the last couple seasons.  Lots have to happen for that to repeat itself, but as long as good individuals continue to lead and coach the younger kids, there is no reason not to believe this can’t continue.

That being said, let’s check out how the Spartans did before the dual at home against Holmen and then four days later in Tomah.  Each wrestler’s record from each match will be listed right next to his name.  For example, the following means Brock Polhamus went 0-0 at Sparta and 1-1 in Tomah:  ”Brock Polhamus, 0-0, 1-1.”  Easy enough right?  OK, onto the records…

6th Grade
Connor Bernett, 0-0, 1-1
Matthew Fahning, 0-0, 1-0
