by Derek on February 3, 2012

Sparta had one of their more impressive victories over Tomah in recent memory Thursday night. The Spartans won 10 of 14 matches and racked up five pins to power their way to a 45-11 victory in Tomah and secure 2nd place in the MVC.  It is the sixth straight year the Spartans have finished second or better in the MVC.

After Sparta took a 12-0 lead, Tomah battled back to within 15-11, but then Michael Beeler started a string of six Spartan wins that included four pins to lock up the victory. Picking up pins for the Spartans were Toby Mosley, Michael Beeler, John Roddick, Tristan Zurfluh and Derek VonRuden.  Full results are below…

138  –  Paul Vantassel defeated Tanner Dworak (Tomah) 4-3
145  –  Michael Murnane defeated Drew Miller (Tomah) 10-4

SPARTA 45 – Tomah 11
Tomah penalized one team point for unsportsmanlike conduct at 160 pounds

This Spartan senior class accomplished some great things against Tomah. They went 3-1 in four years and ended Tomah’s run of six straight MVC championships.  Now, that senior class must turn their attention to getting themselves and the rest of the team ready for the tournament season.  The Spartans are off until next Saturday, February 11th when they travel to West Salem for the WIAA division two regional. The team champion of that regional will then wrestle in a team sectional in Wisconsin Dells on February 14th.

The win over Tomah pushes the Spartans’ dual record to 18-3 on the year and 5-1 in the conference. Congrats Sparta!
