December 2009

Lots to talk about here.  Our last post talked about Joel Dutton’s Kenosha Tremper squad going 10-0 at a dual tournament last weekend.  They followed that up by winning the two-day Mid-States Tournament in Whitewater by edging out runner-up Burlington by two points.  Finishing fourth in the tournament was Mukwonago who is currently ranked 12th in the state by Wisconsin Wrestling Online.  Tremper is not even an honorable mention now, but if they keep wrestling they way they have been the last couple weeks, it’s only a matter of time before they break into the rankings.

After this year’s Bi-State Classic, the power rankings have seen a small shift.  New Lisbon has moved into the No. 2 spot while La Crosse Central enters the rankings at No. 8.  Sparta still tops the rankings for the second week in a row.  Some of you have asked where the rankings come from.  They come from myself and Mike Montgomery.  Yes, we are Spartan fans and supporters, but don’t let that make you think we are biased.  Last week was the first time since the 2003-04 season that Sparta entered the top spot in the rankings as Tomah owned that place for the last six years.  We try to be as unbiased and objective as possible and I think it has worked out pretty well.

Finally, be sure to check the website over the next few days as I work to edit and put up some wrestling photos from the Spartan JV Invite that took place yesterday.  When I get results from the tournament, I will also post them here.  I’m entering a really busy week so forgive me if it takes a little more time for me to put them up here.

Spartan alumnus Joel Dutton is now the head wrestling coach at Kenosha Tremper high school and he has his Trojan wrestling team off to a 19-4 start this season. The 19 wins include 10 wins last weekend at the Holiday Duals hosted by Milwaukee Hamilton.  Here’s an excerpt from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s website.

Kenosha Tremper Trojans wrestling coach Joel Dutton was looking forward to getting his full lineup back on the mat in a big tournament.

He came away impressed Wednesday afternoon as Tremper dismantled the competition at the Holiday Duals, the state’s largest two-day dual tournament.

Tremper finished with a 10-0 record in the 12-team tournament held at Milwaukee Hamilton, followed by Marshall (9-1), Kenosha Bradford (8-2) and Wauwatosa (7-3).

“I’m proud of the guys,” said Dutton, whose team improved to 19-4 overall. “We’ve come a long way. We wrestled pretty doggone good.”

The biggest match of the day was supposed to be between Tremper and Milwaukee Bradley Tech, ranked No. 10 in the area by the Journal Sentinel.

But Tech lost a pair of matches to Kenosha Bradford and Wauwatosa by identical 37-35 scores and lost confidence the rest of the second day as Tech finished 1-4 on Wednesday and 6-4 overall.

One team that Dutton’s squad defeated, Marshall, is currently an honorable mention in Division 2 according to Wisconsin Wrestling Online.  To read the full article, visit the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel website by clicking here

The Spartans had six wrestlers finish in the top five.  Leading the way once again for Sparta was Matt Tourdot who managed to find 2:46 of wrestling on the day.  Tourdot stormed through the tournament picking up pins in 43 seconds, 24 seconds and in the final he took undefeated Steve Sizer of West Bend West down in 1:39.  Sparta’s other finalist, Morgan Leis, ran into a wall against Tyler Veling of Brookfield Central falling by pin in 1:52.

Badger State Invite Updates…

by Derek on December 23, 2009

6:28 pm —  Sparta is making a move in the standings, but it will still be very hard for them to catch Stoughton.  Sparta is currently in fifth place with 130 points–only eight points back of 2nd place Oak Creek.  That’s a far cry from an hour ago when they were nearly 30 points back of second place.

So what changed in the past hour?  Sparta picked up a bevy of semifinal and consolation semifinal victories.  Advancing to the finals for Sparta were Morgan Leis and Matt Tourdot.  Moving onto the consolation finals were Adam Wiedl, Brandon Rickert, Tom Tourdot, Brandon Brueggen and Jordan Stanek.  At 130 pounds, Toby Mosley fell 7-0 to last year’s 112-pound state runner-up in Siven Furseth of Janesville Craig.  Mosley will now wrestle Brandon Frederick of Waterford for 3rd Place.

In the finals at 215 pounds, we’ll have a matchup of undefeateds as 19-0 Matt Tourdot faces 14-0 Steven Sizer of West Bend West.  Sizer finished his freshman season last year with a 16-20 record so Tourdot will be facing a much-improved version compared to last year.  At 152 pounds, Morgan Leis will face off with 22-0 Tyler Veling of Brookfield Central.  Velling finished the 2008-09 season with a 30-11 record and first-round exit from sectionals.

5:08 pm —  Not much has changed in the way of team scoring for Sparta.  The Spartans currently have 104 points, which puts them in 7th place.  There are 18 teams wrestling.  They are 1.5 points back of Campbellsport for sixth place and seven points back of Sauk Prairie for fifth.  Host Stoughton leads all teams with 168 points, wich puts them well ahead of second place Franklin with 132.5 points.

As for the individuals, not a ton has changed either.  Bryce Nowaczyk is 2-2, Adam Wiedl is 3-1, Brandon Rickert is 3-1, Nick Winchel is 2-2, Toby Mosley is 2-1, Derek VonRuden is 2-2, Logan Denasha is 0-2, Nick Anderson is 0-2, Morgan Leis is 2-0, Tom Tourdot is 3-1, Brandon Brueggen is 2-1, Jordan Stanek is 2-1, Matt Tourdot is 2-0 and Steve Stevenson is 1-2.

Those wrestlers at 2-0 have had to wait through consolation wrestlebacks so that’s why there have been few updates since 2:52.

2:52 pm After a strong start, Sparta has come back to Earth a little bit in the second round running into some stiff competition.  The Spartans are currently in 6th, but are picking up a lot of wins in the consolation rounds.  Leading all teams is host Stoughton with 116.5 points.  The Spartans are 39.5 points back of Stoughton with 77 points behind Oak Creek, Sauk Prairie, Franklin and Iowa Grant.

Individually, here is the current rundown record-wise.  On the day, Bryce Nowaczyk is 1-2, Adam Wiedl is 2-1, Brandon Rickert is 2-1, Nick Winchel is 1-1, Toby Mosley is 2-0, Derek VonRuden is 1-1, Logan Denasha is 0-2, Nick Anderson is 0-1, Morgan Leis is 2-0, Tom Tourdot is 1-1, Brandon Brueggen is 1-1, Jordan Stanek is 1-1, Matt Tourdot is 2-0 and Steve Stevenson is 1-1.  Keep checking back here for updates or follow the action on Trackwrestling.com.

Spartans crush Rangers, JV Sweep

For awhile it looked like Sparta might shut out Logan. The JV won every single match and the varsity only lost two matches. In the end that spelled out a resounding 67-12 victory over the Rangers. The outcome was unusual for a number of reasons. Logan is typically a team that has given Sparta fits [...]
