Tourdot 3rd at State

by Derek on February 28, 2009

Sparta's Matt Tourdot defeated a pair of wrestlers he faced earlier this season en route to finishing 3rd at 189 pounds in the Division One state tournament.

Tourdot kicked off the day by wrestling Nick Broadway of Hartford Union and it was Tourdot, not Broadway, that put on a show.  Tourdot avenged a 4-2 loss to Broadway at the West Allis Invite by winning 5-1 and advancing to the third place bout.

Matching up with Tourdot for the third place match was Appleton North's Tremayne Williams.  At the Freedom Invitational back on January 17th, Tourdot shutout Williams 7-0 to advance to the finals of that tournament, which he eventually won.  The end result was no different today as Tourdot defeated Williams 4-2 to secure a spot on the podium.

Tourdot finishes the season with a 42-3 record, which ties him with Jared Rickert and Jeff Dolan for second all-time on the Spartan single season wins list.  Rickert still owns that record with 48 wins during the 2006-07 season.

The addition of new tournaments this year definitely helped Tourdot in his journey to the podium.  Many of the wrestlers he faced in this tournament and in sectionsl, Tourdot met at tournaments that were not on the Spartan schedule last year or a few years ago.  Next year could also be interesting for Tourdot and Sparta as a whole as there is a good chance that Sparta could drop to Division Two because of decreasing enrollment.  Whether or not that happens depends on a number of factors and won't be known until later this year.

In any case, a big congrats to Matt Tourdot for his 3rd place finish and for a great season!

Check out the videos below to see both of Tourdot's matches on Saturday.

Tourdot loses close one in semis

by Derek on February 28, 2009

Sparta's Matt Tourdot lost a close 6-5 match to Jackson Hein of Wausau West.  With the victory, Hein notched his 50th victory of the year, but it didn't come easy.  Tourdot pushed Hein to the final second, but came up just short of advancing to his first ever state title appearance.

Tourdot will take his 40-3 record into the Consolation semifinals against Nick Broadway (42-4) of Hartford Union.  Tourdot wrestled Broadway earlier this year in the finals of the West Allis Invite losing 4-2.  Expect this match to be another close one.  Broadway lost the opening match of the tournament, but came back to win two matches by major decisions to setup his match with Tourdot.

The winner of the Tourdot-Broadway match will advance to the third place bout.  The loser will wrestle for fifth.  Check back here tomorrow for the latest results or follow along at Trackwrestling as the action happens.  The consolation semis start at 11am tomorrrow while the third and fifth place matches will happen later tomorrow afternoon.  Tourdot is guaranteed at least sixth place.

10:53am  –  Sparta's Derek McDonald saw his 2009 State Tournament run come to an end Thursday morning at the hands of Dominic Morelli of Racine Park.  Morelli pinned McDonald in 2:43.  McDonald finishes the season with a 30-13 record and capped off a great wrestling career for the Spartans.

Sparta's Matt Tourdot reached the 40-win plateau Thursday evening and a place in the 189-pound semifinals.  Tourdot opened up action by defeating Jake Dostalek of Waterford 6-2 before taking down Oregon's Kevin Sommers 6-3–a guy he defeated 16-4 earlier this year at the Reedsburg Dual Invitational.  Now Tourdot faces the reigning runner-up at 189 from a year ago in Wausau West's Jackson Hein who will be looking for his 50th win of the year against Tourdot.  Hein and Tourdot hit the mat during the round that starts at 7:00pm tonight.

At 119 pounds, Derek McDonald ran into some very stiff competition in Shane McQuade from Appleton West.  McQuade lived up to his 45-1 record by tech falling McDonald 17-2.  However, McQuade won his second match in overtime ensuring McDonald a wrestleback against Dominic Morelli (39-5) out of Racine Park.  Morelli lost in overtime to McQuade 11-9.  McDonald wrestles in the round starting at 10am this morning.

Check back here later today for results on both McDonald and Tourdot's matches.

Before you go, check out this video taken by Mike Montgomery of Tourdot's quarterfinal match against Kevin Sommers.

Report: Tomah coach Von Haden learned everything he knows from Sparta’s Tourdot, Stafslien

This may be old, but a La Crosse Tribune article from April 1, 2007 (this is not a joke) named Tomah head wrestling coach Jeff Von Haden the Tribune's Wrestling Coach of the Year.  The award was deserved as Von Haden qualified seven wrestlers to the state tournament, won a Bi-State Division One team title [...]
