Sparta dismantles Onalaska 73-6

by Derek on January 30, 2009

Sparta has never lost to Onalaska in a conference dual.  That didn't change Thursday evening.  Sparta made quick work of their MVC rival to move to 5-0 in the conference and setup a conference championship showdown Tuesday against Tomah at home.  The 73-6 dismantling runs in line with how the Hilltoppers have fared against Sparta in recent memory.  Last year, the Spartans blanked Onalaska 81-0.  The year before wasn't much prettier.  It's not that Onalaska doesn't have the talent to compete–well it might actually be that.  The trouble with the Hilltoppers year after year is that they simply can't fill out all the weight classes and end up forfeiting match after match after match.  And Thursday evening was no different.

The victory brings Sparta's dual record to 10-1 and 5-0 in the MVC.  It's the third straight year Sparta has reached the double-digit win plateau.  In 2006-07, Sparta was 17-3.  Last year they finished 10-4.

Next up for Sparta is a trip across the border to Rochster, MN for the Rochester Tournament.  Both the Varsity and JV will be travelling to wrestle in Rochester.  Action kicks off at 10am Saturday.  Results will be posted to Spartanwrestling.com later that night.

The Coulee Region Power Rankings, now in it's 10th year of existence, have been updated.  New Lisbon has moved into the number two spot in the rankings ahead of Sparta.  Sparta dropped to three while Holmen drops one spot to number four.  New Lisbon moved into the No. 2 spot after finishing nearly 25 points ahead of Sparta at the Sparta Invite. The rest of the rankings are unchanged.

Sparta has an opportunity to move up in the rankings when they take on Tomah one week from today.  The winner of the Tomah-Sparta dual will likely win the MVC.  Sparta will look to end Tomah's dominance over the MVC.  The Timberwolves have not lost a conference dual since the 2003-04 season.  We here at Spartanwrestling.com believe the time has come for that run to come to an end.

Check back here throughout the week for more information on that dual and our coverage of it.

UFC 100: Montgomery vs. Lesnar?

Digging through our old archives, we stumbled upon this photo.  With Brock Lesnar's recent win over Randy Couture for the UFC Heavyweight title, the question must be asked… will Lesnar return to wreak havoc on Montgomery's life for taking credit for the Tasmanian Devil in a wrestling singlet tattoo?  We don't know the answer to [...]
