December 2008

The site of the upcoming regional tournament where Sparta will kick off the postseason has changed from La Crosse Logan to Tomah.  Conspiracy theorists will have their day with this, but it's probably due more to a scheduling conflict than anything else.  The start times for both regionals and sectionals will be 10am.  The schedule page has been updated accordingly.

Also be sure to check out the Coaching Records section of the website as Pat Stevenson recently sent us some information on records for missing years.  Stevenson did a little research at the library and found the record of the 1959 team was 1-1-1 while the 1969-70 wrestling team sported a 2-9 record.  The information can be found by clicking here.

Thanks Pat!

Coaches Corner

by Derek on December 29, 2008

Well, Christmas is over and the best gift for wrestlers is their two pound allowance for making weight.  We wrestled a lot better this past weekend at the Badger State invitational.  I am very proud of our 5th place finish and we are still getting better.  Every week and every meet we have improved.  Our goal is to be the best shape we can be in by regionals.  It's okay if we are not on top yet, it is still too early in the season for that.

We will be hosting a scrimmage tomorrow on December 30 at 9:00 in the new gym.  It will be al ot of fun and it will give us a chance to have a practice with some new faces.  Fans and parents are welcome to come in and watch the Spartans practice.

Go Sparta!

Spartans 5th at Badger State Invite

by Derek on December 28, 2008

Sparta nabbed 5th place at the Badger State Invite and 189-pounder Matt Tourdot won his bracket for the Spartans saturday afternoon in Madison, WI.  Derek McDonald and Kevin Schmitz also battled their way to the finals before losing to wrestlers from Stoughton.  Sparta’s 133.5 points put them just ahead of Oak Creek and Sauk Prairie at 132.5 points and just short of Sheboygan South’s 138.5 points for 4th place.  Stoughton ran away with the team title scoring 257 points.

Five Spartan wrestlers placed in the top five with Tourdot leading the way.  Derek McDonald and Kevin Schmitz both placed second while Morgan Leis and Jordan Stanek came away with 5th place finishes.  Aaron Freeman (6th), Toby Mosley and Jesse Amundson (7th) as well as Bryce Nowaczyk, Nick Anderson and Brandon Brueggen (8th) also placed for the Spartans.

Sparta now takes some time off before heading to La Crosse Logan on Thursday, January 8th to wrestle another tough MVC opponent.  Logan is currently ranked 7th in our Coulee Region Power Rankings so it looks to be another tough test for Sparta.  The JV take the mat at 615pm while Varsity action starts at 730pm.  Be sure to check back to Spartanwrestling.com for more details and results on that match.

Finally, be sure to check out the results page.  A new column has been added so that if you want to go back and see how Sparta did against Prairie Du Chien during the first dual of the year you can do so.  Just click on the “Match Details” link and it will take you to the post that appeared on this website that listed results.  The same type of thing is in the works for last season’s results.  Links to live blogs will also be posted so you can get even more exact information on those duals.

Wrestling Photos To Be Consolidated

by Derek on December 27, 2008

The wrestling photos you see on the column to the left of this post will be consolidated soon.  We're not talking about the old school photos or the ones of the coaches–just the ones from the 2006-07 season.  We'll be adding some new photos there soon and just wanted to clean up some space.

Those photos won't be lost, but they might be all combined into a "2006-07 Duals" or a "2006-07 Tournament" gallery.  I'm still trying to figure out how that will be done, but rest assured all photos up there now will still be there albeit in a slight different manner.

Sparta met some of its toughest competition of the season this past weekend at the West Allis Invitational.  The Spartans finished in 9th place with 88 points.  Hartford scored 193 points to take the team title edging out Pewaukee's 185.5 points.

Matt Tourdot led the way for Sparta taking 2nd place at 189 pounds.  Tourdot beat a state placewinner last year at the same weight to advance to the finals where he lost to another state placewinner in Hartford's Nick Broadway by a score of 4-2.  The kid Tourdot beat in the semifinals, Josh Mohr of Pewaukee, placed 3rd at 189 pounds in last year's state tournament while Broadway took 4th at the same weight.

Beyond Tourdot, 215-pounder Kevin Schmitz nabbed 3rd, Derek McDonald and Jordan Stanek both grabbed 4th and 171-pounder Brandon Brueggen took home 6th.
