December 2007

Matt Tourdot won his 9th place bout to lead Sparta to a 13th place finish in Division One.  Hartland Arrowhead ran away with the team title distancing second place Bloomington-Kennedy by 78.5 points.  Arrowhead won with 345.5 points.  Sparta finished the tournament with 97 points.

Of the four Spartan wrestlers that qualified for the second day, three took home placement medals.  Derek McDonald placed 11th, Matt Tourdot finished 9th and Kevin Schmitz finished 11th.  Derrick Johnson lost his first match of the day and was eliminated.  For the tournament they finished as follows:

====================

112  –  Derek McDonald, 11th Place, 5-3 with two pins and a tech fall
125  –  Derrick Johnson, DID NOT PLACE, 4-2 with two pins and a major decision
145  –  Matt Tourdot, 9th Place, 6-2 with three pins
215  –  Kevin Schmitz, 11th Place, 5-3 with four pins

====================

Tomah finished with 255 points to finish 4th overall and 3rd in Division One.  La Crosse Logan finished 7th in Division One while Holmen took home 11th.

Sparta will return to action on Thursday, January 3rd against La Crosse Logan.  The dual will take place in Sparta with the JV taking the mat at 6:15pm and the Varsity at 7:30pm.  This could shape up to be another close dual with Logan’s strong finish at Bi-State and close duals with other MVC teams.

Finally, check back later this week for an update to the Coulee Region Power Rankings.

Rough Day One at Bi-State

by Derek on December 28, 2007

After the first day of this year’s Bi-State Classic, Sparta sits in 14th place in Division One out of 18 teams.  No Spartan wrestler made it through the first day without getting beaten.  Arrowhead leads all Division One teams with 181.5 points.  Tomah sits in fourth place with 157 points.  Sparta has 69.5 points.

While this will be the first year since 2004 that Sparta will not return a Bi-State champion, a number of wrestlers escaped the day with one loss and have great opportunities to place.  Below are full results from Day One at this year’s Bi-State Classic…

====================

103  –  Tom Tourdot, ELIMINATED, 2-2 with a pin
112  –  Derek McDonald, 3-1 with two pins
119  –  Nick Winchel, ELIMINATED, 2-2 with a pin and a tech fall
125  –  Derrick Johnson, 4-1 with two pins and a major decision
130  –  Jesse Amundson, ELIMINATED, 2-2 with a pin
135  –  Morgan Leis, ELIMINATED, 2-2 with a pin
140  –  Cody Olson, ELIMINATED, 0-2
145  –  Matt Tourdot, 3-1 with a pin
152  –  Jordan Stanek, ELIMINATED, 0-2
160  –  Nick Anderson, ELIMINATED, 0-2
171  –  Seth Harelson, ELIMINATED, 2-2 with a pin and a major decision
189  –  Brandon Amundson, ELIMINATED, 1-2
215  –  Kevin Schmitz, 3-1 with three pins
285  –  Brandon Brueggen, ELIMINATED, 0-2

====================

Sparta’s Michael Jacobsen and Trevor Hutson did not wrestle.  Last year, this upper weight duo accounted for almost 70 individual victories and they would have likely improved Sparta’s team score beyond the 69.5 points accumulated today.

The four remaining wrestlers all have great shots at placing tomorrow.  Kevin Schmitz pounded out three pins to lead all Spartans in that category.

Check back tomorrow night for full results or check out Trackwrestling.com for up-to-the-minute updates.

Keep checking back here over the next few weeks for some new additions to Spartanwrestling.com. We hope to add video highlights from duals, tournaments and more along with interviews and other items.

Additionally, while there have not been any photo galleries from this season added to the website yet, I’ll be on hand for the Tomah dual at the end of January and should have plenty of still images along with some video to add to the website in the days after the dual. Keep checking back for new additions.

Also, check back tomorrow for seeding information related to tomorrow’s Bi-State Classic.

UPDATED: Sparta defeats Holmen

by Derek on December 21, 2007

Sparta improved its MVC record to 2-0 on the year by defeating Holmen 38-27 Thursday night in Holmen. The dual victory over the Vikings moves Sparta’s dual record on the year to 4-2. Check below for full match-by-match results…

130 — Aaron Murray (H) pinned Jesse Amundson 2:16
135 — Dustin Henning (H) decisioned Morgan Leis 5-2

====================

Derrick Johnson’s pin of Joe Benson at the 125 pound match sealed the victory for the Spartans as they went ahead 37-19. While the score was close, the Spartans had opportunities to make this a much more lopsided victory. One point losses at 112 and 152 could have swung either way. Sparta was also on the positive end of a one point victory with Kevin Schmitz taking down the 11-2 Marc Mades at 215.

Trevor Hutson returned from an injury to pick up his first victory of the year by pinning his opponent at heavyweight. Expect Kevin Schmitz and Hutson to move back and forth between 215 and 285 this year depending on the dual.

====================

Other area scores are as follows:

La Crosse Central 42
La Crosse Aquinas 29

Tomah 75
Onalaska 6

It wasn’t a pretty sight Thursday night when former Spartan coach Lyle Blum took over as head coach at Onalaska. Blum takes the reigns on a program that has gone 5-94-1 since joining the MVC in 1989. Onalaska’s last conference victory came during the 2003-04 season. We wish Blum the best of luck as he attempts to resurrect the Hilltoppers’ program, but that wishing stops when they wrestle Sparta.

====================

Sparta takes the next week off before returning on Friday, December 28th and 29th for the Bi-State Classic at the La Crosse Center. Check back between now and then for miscellaneous updates and seeding information related to this year’s Bi-State Classic.

Sparta defeats Holmen

by Derek on December 20, 2007

I don’t know specifics yet, but I do know that Sparta defeated Holmen tonight–possibly by a score of 37-25. Full updated match-by-match results will be posted here tomorrow morning, but Sparta won 7 weight classes and picked up 5 pins in the process. Those pins were instrumental in getting separation from Holmen who only managed 2 pins on the night. Check back tomorrow for full results.
